Looks like those with a Google Nexus S or the original Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, the Motorola Xoom, aren’t going to get bumped to Jelly Bean 4.2, putting your not all-that-ancient devices essentially out to pasture. Rubbish. [Google via Android Police]

Nexus S is old ain’t it? Have to put CM10 on them instead.
Not surprised tbh
I kind of assumed, considering they’ve got Jelly bean 4.1, that not a lot would change in 4.2 that would prevent them from getting it. I guess it just means they don’t want to devote developer time to it.
Nexus S is Dual Core 1Ghz, more than enough for 4.2, Cyanogenmod will be on the case
Nexus S is single core 1Ghz.
well….. damn.
my apologies, i was mistaken this time
It’s an Exynos chip though, so the processor has enough grunt to power 4.2. The problem with the Nexus S is that it has an amazing GPU, which makes the processing power fantastic for its time, but it only has 512 MB of RAM, and only 378 (or something like that) is dedicated to CPU, with the rest dedicated to GPU. 400MB of RAM is pushing what’s possible for 4.2, really.
never know though, XDA guys managed to get 4.1 on HTC Desire , 1Ghz CPU (Snapdragon Chip) and 512MB RAM, not too sure how long term performance was though
Yeah, I run 4.1 on my Desire at the moment, and it’s really quite unstable, same with 4.0, because of the proprietary Qualcomm drivers. Same with my Desire Z. Ironically, my much worse Optimus One probably runs 4.1 better…
annoying isnt it, especially as there isnt a single newer hardware qwerty option out there (not here anyway, the US have had loads but theyre pretty much all CDMA only and wont work here)
I think (Had an S3 for month, so my memory is a bit bad) I ran the ICS Andromadeus build as my daily driver, it ran reasonably well, but quite a few force closes. I really really miss the keyboard – I’d give up the .7 inch of my screen for a keyboard – 4 inch with a keyboard would be perfect, maybe double the battery size as well. RIP keyboard phones. In regard to your G1 comment, an old friend of mine looked to install that on his, I don’t think he could find the source, sadly.
well there is actually one qwerty phone but i can be pretty sure itll never hit UK shores, the samsung galaxy s blaze q (AKA galaxy s relay 4g) its got hardware qwerty, a dual core 1.5ghz krait chip and an adreno 225 (a bit old i know) and it supports GSM so will work here but id still bet itll never make it here

i thought about trying to give up my hardware keyboard, people always say “youll get used to it” but i work with phones so ive used more than my fair share of touch keyboards and i still dont like them
oh and heres that jellybean for the g1:

Far, far too old, but cheers anyway, and it’ll never make it here
. One day, there will be another one
. Thank you so much, I’ll let him know
they actually got 4.1 on the G1 (HTC Dream, the very first android phone) probably didnt run too well but it ran. i imagine the performance sucks on the desire too, ive tried the JB test builds for my desire z but theyre still a bit too buggy for my liking, it doesnt run terribly but it has a few issues so i stick with my own tweaked ICS build from the andromadus repo
FTFA: “I can’t comment about the future of Nexus S and Xoom, sorry”
So… you’re not getting 4.2 *yet*. It hasn’t been ruled out.
To be honest the Nexus S is at the end of its lifecycle and I will be glad to be rid of mine when I upgrade next month. Since successive ICS/JB updates it has got slower and slower and the battery life shorter and shorter.
That and the fact the screen is a bit smashed… oops
