Earlier this month it was announced that Apple and HTC reached a patent settlement which would see the Taiwanese phone manufacturer enter into a 10-year licensing agreement. Now, HTC has firmly quashed rumoured figures which suggested they’d pony up $8 (£5) to Cook and co for every Android handset it sold.
Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, has referred to the $8 figure as “outrageous”, reports Reuters. During an interview in Tokyo he explained:
“I think that these estimates are baseless and very, very wrong. It is a outrageous number, but I’m not going to comment anything on a specific number. I believe we have a very, very happy settlement and a good ending.”
So, while it’s not clear exactly how much HTC is paying Apple, it seems it’s not quite as generous as the rumour mill had you believe. [Reuters]

Hmmm, depending on where the vocal emphasis is you can change the meaning of the statement
“I think that these estimates are baseless and very, very wrong. It is a outrageous number, but I’m not going to comment anything on a specific number. I believe we have a very, very happy settlement and a good ending.”
In other words the amount is very high, but people are guessing the number wrong due to incorrect figures and/or methodology. They are very happy that Apple aren’t going to sue them into extinction.
HTC have always been looking to do a deal with apple. If you look at the history of the fight, it started when HTC was a big player in the Android market so was a prime target as apple wants to kill competition through the lawsuit.
Now HTC is not longer a threat and apple knows that they cannot kill Android there is little to gain by going after HTC and they could lose a lot of money as HTC does actually have a number of patents that could hurt apple.
The big enemy of apple now is Samsung and if they can lose Samsung some market share by giving HTC some help then it fits there strategy.
