There’s no doubt that if you’re reading this you’re at least partially a geek. Hell, you’re probably a full-on, 100 per cent tech-obsessed nerd, but we’re all friends here, so we won’t hold it against you. But has being called a ‘geek’ or a ‘nerd’ turned from a jock’s hurtful insult into a good thing? Is it cool to be a geek now? [BBC]

Calling All Music Nerds: Hole Up With This Awesome Board Game
What Kind of Geek Are You?
Chic Louis Vuitton For Geeks Tee
Geek/nerd has been taken in the wrong way now e.g. people on Facebook thinking they’re geeky/nerdy because they play Xbox and watch Big Bang Theory
Well said. I fucking hate that faux geeky culture. Just because you play Skyrim doesn’t make you a nerd. Don’t even get me started on the Big Bang Theory.
i love skyrim and big bang theory, but that doesn’t make me a geek, i’m a geek because i’m a geek, plain and simple
Also, somewhat related. Watch Will.I.Am use corporate buzz words and spout bullshit
I’m a geek/nerd and proud of it !
With you on that one.
check!
Hot chicks with nerdy glasses… dime a dozen now
You say it like it’s a bad thing?
It IS a bad thing now.. All I see is chicks with the stolen 3D glasses with the lenses missing and it’s old and boring now.
That’s not a geek, that’s a hipster.
Ugh, hipster
I am, so no harm being called it. I have also noted that celebrities have started calling themselves geek lately Sir Alan Sugar claimed he was a tech geek recently (apparently he has a sense of humour).
Scrap the recently just keep the lately.

I remember it was definitely an insult when I was at school. I’m not sure now. Would I describe myself as a geek? That’s the biggest question. Not sure I would, but I probably am.
‘Geek’ and ‘Nerd’ are words sometimes used to point out socially awkward people. I wouldn’t say all Geeks/Nerds are socially inept, but it is most certainly a good assumption.
I got more of the socially awkward and less of the cleverness ):
Hmm.. Is everyone talking about it today?

That article is the source link for this one
I saw it and thought I’d ask my learned friends here
Geek will always be an insult you massive bunch of geeks.
Sticks and stones…
will break your bones
but Nerds will never hurt you
ba da boom tish
When someone refers to me as a geek, I always reply “yeah, but I’m a /cool/ geek”.
This usually expands into a conversation about how I like computers and tech but am still a social person, not like the stereotypical socially awkward glasses wearing high trousered “Moss” character. I always those types are more deserving of the “nerd” moniker.
I would prefer to be Moss, going out would be a lot cheaper, only a couple of glasses of Milk
“I always reply “yeah, but I’m a /cool/ geek”.”
Yeah,.. that,.. there,.. makes you a dad-geek.
I’m pretty sure saying you’re a cool anything immediately cancels out the “coolness”
It’s true. Not even my mum says I’m cool anymore
I reluctantly accepted I was a geek the day I used a Venn diagram to explain to a girl why I wasn’t a nerd.
This one? http://imgur.com/i0BYJ

lol nice, just pinned it
That is a great diagram.
I thought this might make an appearance somewhere in the comments
Nothing beats a good diagram.
if people are rude about geeks and nerds around me, then their free tech support from me stops
From G+ this morning http://imgur.com/SW2fb
I saw that on a t shirt once but was so paralysed with glee that I missed the opportunity to buy it.
A girl at work is wearing this today.

Ahahaha! Brilliant! I think I might have to get that.

No.
It’s definitely not an insult where I work.
If you will excuse me, I have to go to spend lunch time building a Lego death star with my colleagues.
Where do I sign up for a job?
toys’r'us? lol
In my experience, context plays a lot into it.
Though the fact that it can be perceived both ways (flattering and derogatory) now does say something with how the words have evolved over time.
Insult or flattering generally depends on who is saying it. With the company I keep its usually positive but I find the words generally get a bit over-used, some self proclaimed geeks are just those trying to get into the ‘cool’ crowd.
I believe this is whats happened:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFhgupR565Q
I never realized I was a nerd until a few years ago.
I always new I was odd & even had a few years trying to be kewl (during the nu rave scene where my style became cool).
I thought the way I used a computer was normal, until I was at uni and saw how terrible everyone was.
I also almost named my Design Company OTAKU DEISGN!
(Japanese for Nerd)
Working behind a counter which has “Geek” plastered all over it, I tend to get asked this very question by the older generations. They seem to believe that it is purely a derogatory. I’ve always been happy to consider myself a geek.
But thanks to MonkeyTypes venn diagram, I realise thats just wishful thinking. Turns out I am just a nerd.
It was n’t the meek who inherited the earth – It was the geeks!
I recall being referred to as a ‘Neek’ by a girl I worked with.
Apparently it was supposed to be a good thing and a juxtaposition of ‘Nerd’ and ‘Geek’.
I told her to shut her whore mouth.
I believe it is the faux nerds that are branded ‘cool’ and that the word has lost its true meaning. The real nerds and geeks that I’ve come across are always introvert, badly dressed, smelly and hang around with similar people. They get rather defensive when talking about anything to do with tech and a lotta them are pretty rude and stubborn. This is just my perception though, I understand a lot of you self proclaimed will probably find this offensive but in my opinion, it’s true. I game quite a bit and spend each waking moment on my macbook, (the latter not because I’m naive about computing and have too much money but merely because I choose Apple.) and I wouldn’t ever consider myself even a faux nerd.
Because of the “look, I’, a geek because I play videogames” bastards, The term geek will soon carry just as much value as “swag”…
Sad story.
I used to get offended by it, but not so much any more. I used to get offended by it, but now I don’t really – unless they say it as if it is actually a bad thing. I’m kind of a Moss type nerd – I’m rather socially awkward – but also a Nerdfighter, because who doesn’t love John and Hank Green? But I don’t really hang around with other geeks/nerds, just one or two I’d say. And I don’t dress like the stereotypical geek/nerd either.
In summary, I’m not sure. But as others have said, if you only watch The Big Bang Theory and/or play a few video games, you’re not really a geek or a nerd.
