Kim Dotcom has been hyping up Megaupload’s new website Mega for so long that it seemed like a given that the file sharing site would come back bigger and badder. But it doesn’t look likely because Me.ga has already been shut down by Gabon, a small country in Africa that controls the .ga domain.
According to Stuff.co.nz, Blaise Louembe, communications minister for Gabon, says:
Communications Minister Blaise Louembe has reportedly said he had given an instruction for www.me.ga to be “suspended” and that Gabon “cannot serve as a platform or screen for committing acts aimed at violating copyrights, nor be used by unscrupulous people”.
Kim Dotcom, ever the obstacle crusher, says they have backup domains to use so it’s not a cause for concern. Guess it can’t be cleverly named Me.ga anymore though! [Stuff.co.nz via CNET]

Megaupload's New Website Is Me.ga
The FBI Is Already Getting Sued for Shutting Down MegaUpload
Me.ga Is Dead; Long Live Mega.co.nz
Oh sod it.
Phuck Gabon!
I wonder if someone gave Gabon a little nudge nudge wink wink to make this happen
I thought a country like Gabon would have more pressing issues they should be concentrating on, like food and water and clothing.. before can pass judgements on complex moral philosophies and laws.
More pressing issues like making sure that nothing interferes with the aid they receive from the US you mean?
i was hoping more like bribery
but it is illegal in US, although you can do pretty much anything illegal outside…
Ya would hardly put bribing an African leader past the Feds
It makes sense. First Obama becomes the President for a second term and Mega goes down.
Obama is the future.
The Future for the end of Piracy.
Are you expecting a team of Navy Seals to be on the way to New Zealand shortly?
Well, maybe a “special” team.
Well, given Kim’s not-too-diminutive size, it’d be a team of Navy Walruses……
That was so lame, I just had to +1 it.
How he actually got a .GA domain in the first place alludes me as the registrant is inactive at the moment, and has been for some time.
*registry
Looks like it was registered through mailclub.fr. They’re offering .ga domains for €749.
I’m all for getting tv shows and films for free (until I get a job and can afford dvds/blu rays and also when uk channels buy all the great american shows that i love but have no other way of watching so it’s their own fault really that i have to download them they should be happy that people are enjoying their shows) but kim dotcom is a prick
i think the biggest issue is how hes been marketing it and how the press has been marketing it. If this was marketed at a secure way of transferring files (which is all it is) then it wouldst be getting as much heat from the feds as it is. Marketing it as a piracy tool presumably puts them in trouble with the law, as a file transfer tool it wouldn’t, well, they wouldn’t liek it but it wouldn’t be illegal.
