These days filmmakers often turn to computer graphics for scenes of destruction that would otherwise be too expensive or dangerous to stage in real life. But Skyfall posed a different problem. Namely that the effects crew didn’t want to damage a priceless 1960 Aston Martin DB 5 that appeared in the original Bond film 50 years ago.
So instead of turning to 3D graphics, they turned to 3D printers.
The effects crew modelmakers called on a company called Voxeljet, who used a massive 3D printer with a capacity of 283 cubic feet to reproduce three 1:3 scale models of the Aston Martin. Each pseudo-miniature was actually assembled from 18 individual components so that they could be assembled with real-life functionality such as opening doors, trunks, and hoods. Unfortunately one of the models met its untimely death in an elaborate Hollywood-esque explosion, but its sacrifice ensured the original DB 5 was not harmed in the making of the film. It Wouldn't Be Black Friday Without Shoppers Fighting Over Cheap Electronics
What Kid Wouldn't Want This Nuclear Power Plant Playset?
Who Wouldn't Want a Twin-Engine Jet-Powered Harley?
Thank goodness for that!
I went to the Skyfall Lodge set in Surrey and that Aston was really a citroen with a fake shell (according to the security guys). They spent at least an hour filming close ups of the bonnet being pelted with bullets.
Let me get this straight: they didn’t want to turn to 3D graphics because they didn’t want to destroy the priceless DB5?
Yeah but they wanted to destroy something. And You can’t beat a god ol’ practical effect.
Give it a few years and we’ll quite easily be able to beat a good ol’ practical effect. We’re damned close now. Perfect after the fact control of every variable is valuable.
We already can beat a good ol’ practical effect. There’s a lot more CG out there than people realise
It was probably cheaper to go the non CG route with the car. Bond’s not as flush as he once was.
It blows up? Thanks for giving a spoiler away in a film I have yet to see..
