From games and puzzles to art apps and work aids, here’s our essential S Pen top 10…

We wouldn’t be surprised if the S in S Pen stood for smart - this pen can do a lot. If only there was an official step-by-step guide to the Samsung GALAXY Note II and all its pen gestures and functionality.

Luckily enough, there is! It’s called Note II User Digest and it takes the form of an attractive, free magazine-style app you can browse with ease.

Loaded with videos and illustrations, it’s the perfect way to get your head around the wealth of features on the Note II and its multifunctional S Pen.

Available through the Samsung App portal, Makeup is for anybody who likes to dabble in a bit of beauty. The app provides a number of pre-loaded mug-shots to prettify with your S Pen, or you can take a photo and use your own.

It’s easy to map facial features and apply a range of cosmetics using the S Pen or automatically. The app is based on real, commercially available cosmetics, too, so it’s easy to call up a list of what you’ve used.

This includes links to buy from the manufacturer’s websites, so you can easily replicate your creations in the real world.

LayerPaint

LayerPaint

S Note is great for drawing with the S Pen, offering the same level of pressure sensitivity you’d expect to find in an app like Photoshop. But arty types used to using such professional desktop apps will miss the ability to overlay and individually edit different layers.

As its name suggests, however, LayerPaint does support layers, while also letting you specify canvas size, import images and choose from a wide range of tools and brushes.

Its versatility is its strength, even letting you remap buttons to speed up your workflow. And with the option to export your creation as a Photoshop file, you can even pick up your on-the-go illustrations at your desktop whenever you choose.

Infinite Painter

If LayerPaint is more for the budding graphic designer within, this app is more suited to those who prefer the traditional paintbrush and white spirit approach.

Giving you the ability to blend your own colours, its digital brush experience delivers soft and even gradients through the S Pen, akin to using oil paints.

As with LayerPaint and S Note, it’s pressure sensitive and takes full advantage of the 1,024 degrees of touch that the Note II takes in its stride. A perfect addition to any artist’s paint box.

Touch Retouch

Whether it’s a spot, caked makeup or an unsightly sweat patch, we’ve all wished some pictures of us were a little more forgiving. The GALAXY Note II is already ahead of the game here, with its beauty mode and Best Face option, but Touch Retouch takes blemish removal to the next level.

This easy-to-use app harnesses the precision of the S Pen to draw around any element of your photo you want to disappear. The app will then use the information in the surrounding areas to artificially replace it your selection, giving you incredibly seamless touch-ups on the go.

Handy Note

We’ve already extolled the wonders of S Note, but what if you want to sync handwritten notes with other Android devices that aren’t S Note ready? Well, that’s where Handy Note comes in.

Syncing your notes across all your Androids, this app also offers a selection of templates and an ingenious text entry system that makes for very natural S Pen input.

But our favourite Handy Note feature is the ability to password protect your notebooks, so you can wirelessly share your handwritten notes swiftly and securely.

EZPDF Reader

EZPDF Reader

PDF files are notoriously difficult to view on some smartphones, thanks to the processing power required to open larger, image-laden documents. Not on the Note II, however, where the quad-core processor makes light work of even the biggest files.

When it comes to annotating PDFs, of course, the Note II has a further advantage in the form of the S Pen. But this ability really comes into its own when combined with the EZPDF app.

This lets you save your doodles as a vector layer, or flatten the whole thing into one image – perfect for mark-ups and secure form signing. There’s even a free version available, too!

Sudoku - S Pen

What makes this version of Sudoku so special is that it was made with the S Pen in mind, allowing you to play in just the same way as you might do a sudoku on the back of a newspaper.

Handwriting recognition needs a quick setup on first use, after which the app proved unerringly reliable, making Sudoku - S Pen an app that any number of puzzle fans can count on.

Maze Racer

This charming maze game might look simple, but it’s easy to get lost in its hand-drawn levels for hours at a time.

Created for a ‘Best S Pen app’ competition held by Samsung, the aim is simply to draw a line from the word ‘start’ to the word ‘finish’. Themed levels see you traversing a racetrack and an anthill to name but two, though the developers encourage you to draw and submit your own custom levels.

Angry Birds Space

Angry Birds Space

Though not designed as an S Pen app, Angry Birds Space makes it in to our top 10 simply because it’s so much better when played with one!

The precise tip allows you to squish significantly more piggies in comparison with using your far less accurate fingers, but takes away none of the challenge that makes it so much fun.

With more depth than the original, this gravity-defying version of the classic bird-blasting swine-splatting smash hit has recently been joined by a Star Wars version, too!
