If the best way to listen to music is to stream it these days, then Spotify has its finger on the pulse of what’s hot and popping in music. And looking at the most popular Spotify songs of 2012, well, that must mean our collective music taste is terribly poppy and probably horrible. Here are the most popular songs on Spotify of 2012.
Most streamed tracks of 2012 (global):
1. Gotye featuring Kimbra – ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’
2. Carly Rae Jepsen – ‘Call Me Maybe’
3. Fun. featuring Janelle Monáe – ‘We Are Young’
4. Flo Rida – ‘Whistle’
5. Flo Rida featuring Sia – ‘Wild Ones’
6. Train – ‘Drive By’
7. Nicki Minaj – ‘Starships’
8. Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa – ‘Payphone’
9. David Guetta featuring Sia – ‘Titanium’
10. Loreen – ‘Euphoria’
As for most streamed artist, the male award goes to David Guetta and the female top spot goes to Rihanna. Coldplay was the most streamed band of 2012 and the biggest album was David Guetta’s ‘Nothing but the Beat’. All right folks, confess down below if you’re guilty of streaming that damn Gotye song (or any others on the top list). [Spotify]

UnFunny in the present context.
I think it’s funny by itself though.
WHAT’S GOING OOOON?!
Love this.
Guilty as charged.
Now I hate myself for having listened to that god awful Gotye song so many times.
I’m fairly certain that I haven’t even heard OF most of these Songs/Artists let along chosen to listen to them.
How OLD are you ?
Guess. Go on, pick a number.
72
Age has nothing to do with it, but good taste certainly does.
I’ve not heard of any of most of these either, Udimion, however I prefer to listen to music that isn’t repeated ad nauseum on the radio.
Speaking of which, is the reason Oppa Gangnam Style doesn’t feature is because people are too busy viewing the video on Youtube?
Haven’t heard of most of these. Had to do a double check because I do know Carly Rae Jepson’s song (had to study it recently on a music course).
Age has everything to do with it, if you’re oblivious to these things. He hasn’t even heard of these people.
But how many of these will be in the top 1000 in 10 years’ time? Not many I’d wager
1. Gotye featuring Kimbra – ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’
3. Fun. featuring Janelle Monáe – ‘We Are Young’
10. Loreen – ‘Euphoria’
I’d be more interested in seeing the UK’s top 10 Spotify songs for 2012… The US taste in music is always that little bit extra cheesy
Had a look back over my lastfm records to try and get an idea of how much I play some of these tracks/bands but in the process I realised lastfm wasn’t linked to spotify on my tablet or phone which is where most of my music listening comes from but it should give an indication:
Fun. According to last FM my 6th most listened too band this year but I much prefer their previous album – the new one is a bit too pop not enough inde for my taste.
Train #20 this year for me but come on who doesn’t like train‽
Gotye #7 not ashamed to admit it, I like the song (my number 3 most listened to track this year) and the album
florider #34 I don’t actually really like him but his music generally gets put on pre going collaborative playlists which as the only member of my friendship group with spotify premium often get played on my account.
But I’ll take solace in the fact that my most listened to band this year is ‘Future of Forestry’ and number 2 is Ben Howard who I saw live last weekend and is an awesome artist
