Drinking booze is wonderful; hangovers are not. In fact, as I get older I suffer hangovers worse and worse. But no longer, perhaps, as the Bytox Hangover Prevention Patch aims to kick that post-booze suffering in the nuts. Slap one of these bad boys on and say goodbye to the morning after.
The idea is that you stick one of these patches somewhere on your body at least 45 minutes before you start boozing. The Bytox contains a “powerful blend of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants” which are absorbed through the skin, just like a nicotine patch. The miracle cure, apparently, replenishes the vitamin B complex and many other vital nutrients that are nuked by booze. In theory, that should prevent hangovers, but we’ll have to take Firebox’s word for it, until we get some in for testing.
Sounds like a great idea, but has anyone tested them out? £13 for a pack of five, or 10 for £20 if you’re a heavy boozer, could be an absolute bargain if they work as advertised. [Firebox]

I volunteer to test their effectiveness threshold on a variety of different drinks.
Sam, this is an excellent opportunity for cross promotion. We get these guys to pay for a Giz Meetup with a free bar in return for us testing their patches. Kat can do a 45 minute speech before the bar opens to give our patches time to kick in, them we give them a thorough check out for the rest of the evening.
There’s no reason it should work; hangovers aren’t caused by vitamin or “nutrient” (whatever they are; it could mean anything) deficiency anyway. For one, it’s not precisely known what causes the combination of symptoms anyway, and for another, a little stick-on patch isn’t going to rehydrate you. Line 1 from the blurb at Firebox : “Bytox™ works in combination with the consumption of plenty of water”.
i.e. it does nothing you’d notice.
Personally, a decent way of avoiding a hangover is to drink in moderation from the start, then, eat something like noodles or rice before you sleep – Chinese food is ideal. The noodles or rice boiled in salty water will sit in your stomach and be digested overnight like a slow-release saline capsule. Provided you’re sober enough to keep it down, it will significantly mitigate any hangover the next day.
And drink about 3 pints of water before going to bed. Granted you will piss like a racehorse all night, but it is better than a blinding hangover..
Define “in moderation”
That’s the name of the Pub, right?
Moderation : if the room is spinning or your speech is slurring, it’s too late for you and you’re going to suffer no matter what.
Are you seriously suggesting a pot noodle and 3 pints of fruit squash could get rid of a bad head after a heavy session, for me that’s a perfect toofer!
Not really, since Pot Noodles aren’t exactly “real food”.
It’s a bit of a myth that hangovers are caused by dehydration (while alcohol triggers fluid loss, the concentrations of alcohol vs. the amount of fluid consumed are so low that it’s only an actual net loss if you’re pounding straight spirits). I’ve not looked into it in a while but the combination of alcohol-digestion by-products, loss of electrolytes through urination and such are far more likely candidates for why you feel like you’ve spent the night being elbow-dropped into a bin.
For some of us the fact we’ve spent the night being elbow-dropped into a bin is a much more likely candidate for that.
My helpful friends once decided to make sure I went to bed after a few too many by Rock Bottoming me into it seven times. I actually woke up feeling quite refreshed.
Haha I don’t think I have seen anyone Rock Bottomed since I was about 15!
That’s why I suggest eating something – preferably mildly salty food saturated in water like rice or noodles. You get real nutrition from the food including electrolytes, and the water retained in it from the cooking process.
I saw this earlier and thought it was a load of bollocks,
blah blah blah…. “just drink plenty of H20″… blah blah blah .
I find just drinking a pint of water after getting home normally prevents the worst of the hangover, so this just sounds like an expensive placebo to me.
If it doesn’t work you know they are going to say, did you drink enough water?
