I live close to a town, it’s not country side as it’s a full estate with brand new houses! probebly around 200 houses within the mile, but I gave up hoping for faster line speeds and we got an outdoor 3G box thing, we get 10Mbps and it’s unlimted so not too bad, but if we where to go with the line it would be under 0.2mbps, but yet they still sell that as broadband.

Fatter pipes aren’t really the solution, if you need more bandwidth you put more expensive kit on the end. You can get as much data as you like over a single fibre pair.

If anyone actually had a FTTH service this could be useful but we don’t and we wont for a long time. Getting 20Gbps down fibre’s nothing new they’re just looking at making it cheaper, which is good but putting fibre in the ground’s where all the cost is.

So unless BT figure out how to get more than 200Mbps down their VDSL connections all this would come to is cheaper cabinet and backhaul equipment, not very exciting.

Probably because only the last mile or so is new, often a lot of the link back to the exchange has been there for years. Also because the Openreach lines still run voice over copper even in fibre areas so they’d have had to run both anyway.

In most cases either because they’d need bigger ducts (which would mean expensive digging) or simply because they’re profit making companies who need to keep overheads down and shoving half a dozen lines to each customer would never pay itself back. Of course if you want to take the cost on yourself you can pay to have a dedicated fibre link wherever you are… Maybe after the lottery win though.

But i live in a town… so i want to be in between.. anything faster!

some of my friends have been upgraded, but it makes no sense that a newly build place has the old infrastructure.

I’m on Up to 20MB/s unlimited… only reason I pay is so its unlimited, or I’d downgrade as I’m not getting the speed. But if I do I would have a monthly cap of a few GB which I’d burn through in days.

If you hadn’t noticed, it annoyed me immensely.

Sounds great, and I’m sure they’ll have fun trying to get the backhaul to match. If you think traffic shaping’s bad now it’ll have to be immense if you get everyone on this.

I’m in Manchester (right in the city centre) and I can’t get above 3mbps! Our line quality is terrible, and it doesn’t look like we’re getting fibre for at least another 12 months….

Naa, they will only ever do the city centers. Stick the country folk on 0.5mbps and give the city 40GBPS!!!! fucking pricks.

I live in a new built house, on a newly build estate (less than 1 year old), and for some reason they laid copper cables.

WHY?!

Due to this, i cannot upgrade, and getting large files and steam games takes hours and hours
