The latest Tolkien epic to be turned into a movie, The Hobbit, isn’t set to be released until December 13th in the UK, but who cares? You can see seven-whole-minutes of the thing right here, right now.
Technically, this isn’t officially approved footage; what you’re really looking at here is an epic trailer, recut from everything released so far from around the world. But it’s about as close as you’ll get to watching the movie right now, so jump on in and tell us what you think. Is this going to be a must watch, or an over-extended snoozefest? The jury’s certainly out right now. [YouTube via Bleeding Cool via Blastr via Gizmodo Australia]

The Hobbit Review: An Unexpected Disappointment
Here's Everything Wrong with The Hobbit
I’ll wait until Friday 14th December at 17:50 in the BFI IMAX so I can enjoy the full 160ish minutes in full IMAX glory.
P.S. Given that there is ample plot available from both the Hobbit and the wider Tolkien world, I struggle to see how this could be a snoozefest, especially as it is unfortunately likely to be less than 3 hours. If you do think it is boring, I’ll happily spend even longer explaining the importance of the Hobbit storylines within the world of Tolkien which should make it more bearable.
SHD FTW!!!
Aww, it’s just the whole three films from just one book thing that makes me think it’ll be pretty drawn out.
But it isn’t one book. The films are centred around the Hobbit story, but also include elements from within the appendices of LOTR, which detail the interlude between the Hobbit and LOTR, as well as other events linked to but not explicitly detailed in the Hobbit but which were still written by Tolkien in his expansion works, such as the events involving the White Council and the expelling of the Necromancer from Dol Guldur.
I guess the fact that I thought the LOTR films were, well, dull in a few places here and there. I still have them on DVD, but I haven’t watched them since I bought them. Just not one for me, really.
Sam mate, word of advice. Talking to Udimion on the subject of Tolkien is like talking to me about Android (in a good way)
Yeah, I just figured that out…
Possibly but I thought one film per book was to compressed. They cut some of my favourite scenes from LOTR, I’d have loved to see Tom Bombadil or the retaking of the shire…
I agree, was shocked first finding out that there was no sign of Tom Bombadil, especially since he was quite a significant character. I think the retaking of the Shire was taken out because it wouldn’t have worked well in film, as it’s not really that dramatic.
