Apple’s sat on its laurals for ages with the iPhone. Hell, iOS has barely changed since it was first launched. But what if Apple ‘pulled a Microsoft’ and spat out something akin to Live Tiles for the iPhone’s home screen. It’d probably look awesome like this.
I want it just for the quick settings icon. It’s so damn tedious digging through menus to get to commonly changed settings like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It’s never going to happen, probably, but one can dream, right? [YouTube via Reddit via TUAW]

Those look suspiciously like Widgets to me?
great minds yada yada
I look forward to the day when Apple introduce widgets at one of their keynotes like its a totally new, revolutionary thing.

Aren’t these more like Android Widgets than Windows Live Tiles?

I dunno about the rest of u, but that looks pretty cool to me. I hope scott forstall ( or his successor) takes a good look at this
I agree this is really cool. What’s even cooler is that in a couple of weeks you’ll be able to pick up a top of the range Android phone that can already do this for just £279.
Don’t buy the 8GB one! You will regret it!
I’m not, I’m just saying. I will probably regret the 16GB, when a 32GB comes out in 3 months.
True.
looks very similar to googles offerings to be honest…
Yep, love that.
Really hope that Forstall ‘leaving’ Apple will stop the iOS stagnation and Ive will drive improvements like this for iOS7.
This please. Lots of this. Just a wifi on/off button and a “primary alarm” on/off would be a fantastic start.
I made an iphone/google/windows phone mockup a while back here:

I know this has been in Android for DONKEY’S YEARS and I don’t see why Apple vehemently reject all forms of Widgets/Live Tiles they add so much functionality to a handset, more so than a stupid little ‘Tap to Tweet’ button. I would rather have a WiFi/Bluetooth/Personal Hotspot toggle to hand than a Facebook post button… I know I can jailbreak but WHYYYYYYYYYY
/Rant LOLZORZZZZ
Really at a mobile phone crossroads as to what I should get next, iPhone 5 wasn’t a big enough step up and Android looks very good! As well as the Nokia Lumia…

“I want it just for the quick settings icon. It’s so damn tedious digging through menus to get to commonly changed settings like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It’s never going to happen, probably, but one can dream, right?”
SBSettings.
Sure, if you’re willing to jailbreak.
“It’s never going to happen, probably, but one can dream, right?”
Why not? Are we really so willing to accept Apple’s ageing interface as the norm?
The major aspects of Apple’s interface design, though revolutionary when they were first introduced, have remained almost stagnant for years.
I can understand why Apple would want to preserve the status quo. They don’t want to anger their millions of users who have gotten used to Apple’s way of doing things, and those users won’t appreciate having to learn a new way of interacting with their phone. Any change risks upsetting Apple’s fat cash cow. However, sometimes a little pain is necessary to make progress. Just look at the giant strides Microsoft have taken with WP7, and Google with ICS. If Apple don’t bite the bullet soon, like they did with the iPhone 5′s screen, they’ll be left behind.
That horrible narrow screen is too small for widgets
Funny, widgets worked fine on my 3.2in HTC Hero.
Im not a fan of the horrible narrow screen in case you missed that
Oh, I got it, just not a fan of criticism for criticism’s sake.
There are a few negative aspects to the 16:9 …er, aspect, but that’s not one of them. The current iPhone’s screen is no narrower than it ever has been, it’s just taller.
I saw a loose connection and went for it
But it was a stupid choice in screen size made even more annoying by the stupid commercials which declare the design decision to be a work of genius when every reason for the choice is quite frankly flawed. I was intending on upgrading from the 4 to the 5 but the screen and the design killed it for me, bit annoyed because I Love iOS
Good god, I hope that never happens.
I’m with you. Horrible way of displaying information.
But I hope they do something different.
Me too. And when they do something different, mark my words Joey, we’re all going to be stunned. Or as the late Scott Forstall used to say, it’s going to be ‘blow-away’.
Yea, I woulden’t know where to begin on iOS, obviously try get rid of all the skeptosicem crap.
I’m not 100% on widgets, but live tiles (i.e. WM8) could be cool if implemented good.
Multitasking could do with a good looking at, like the way you switch apps, something like the iPad four finger slide to swich apps. I like that, maybe palm swipe lol.
The first thing I did on my Android phone was to remove all widgets. Looked pretty cool for about two days until I realised what battery waste they are.
Depends on the widget. Something that just alters settings, like turning WiFi on or off, shouldn’t sap battery at all.
However, a widget that constantly updates your Twitter feed or checks your email will eat battery if it isn’t well designed.
Yeh I don’t get all this live tile crap, it’s basically widgets and I never got them either. Like all I want is a shortcut that leads to the program. Live tiles or widgets or whatever you want to call them are never useful as they barely give any information, they’re always just a teaser to get you to click on the program lol.
I agree with that especially on iOS when apps launch in seconds anyway all I really need are notifications to let me know theres something new. the rest is a waste of space processor and battery I prefer a clean simple intuitive grid of icons with apps which launch quickly and smoothly.
