While rumours have circulated in the past about Microsoft developing its own phone, the Wall Street Journal now claims that Ballmer and co are testing a new device in Asia.
According to “people familiar with the situation”, Microsoft is working alongside component suppliers to test a new cell phone design. Details are, however, scant: one source told the Journal that the screen of the smartphone is “between four and five inches”, and… that’s it.
It’s not surprising, given Microsoft’s launch of Surface, that people are keen to speculate about the fact a cell phone could be hot on its heels. Plus, it would be kinda cool: Microsoft’s eye for design is keener than ever, and while WinPho is great, it’s yet to make the impressions it could. Or even should. A Microsoft phone could change that.
Still, it’s important to not get too excited. As we explained last month, just because Microsoft is testing hardware doesn’t mean it’s going to launch a phone:
[E]ven if these reports turn out to be totally accurate — and that’s far from certain — this does not mean that Microsoft is close to actually making a phone you can buy. It doesn’t even mean it ever will. Just that it’s developing the hardware, and testing it. That’s it.
Where there’s smoke, though, there’s often fire: if rumours like this continue to pop up, it might not be long before you’re holding a Microsoft-made rectangle to your face. [WSJ]

Congrats to Microsoft on increasing their mobile phone market share.
They are currently just behind Blackberry, and I would expect them to overtake Blackberry 1st quarter 2013.
To be fair I could build my own OS and beat Blackberry’s market share, especially as they are circling the drain as a tech company.
Yep, the race for third is really hotting up. Congrats on the 140% year on year increase, but don’t let the dizzy heights of 2% market share go to your head, after all BB10 will be out sometime in 2013 (allegedly)
140% increase is certainly encouraging, and that’s before Windows Phone 8 too.
Everyone has to start somewhere, and I think we are all better off with 3 big players rather than 2.
Also congrats to Android for getting 75% of the market, that’s a huge deal too.
Indeed. I remember the sneers of the iPhone users when Android first appeared in these figures. I seriously expect WP8 to be a strong challenger for second place, Maybe not now, but soon. WP is certainly showing more creativity and innovation than iOS.
It’s already getting close to Apples marketshare in a few countries like Italy, China and Finland (although Finland is kinda cheating!)
Yes, it’s quite funny looking back how Apple fans treated the first sales figures for Andriod. I rememeber those times well.
Do you thik Andriod has peaked at 75%
Well, looking at the market there isn’t much left to take unless they start eating Apple’s share. Apples percentage has remained pretty consistent With mild growth every year. It’s going to get very interesting.
I think Android could go up as far as the 90 percentile. Nothing would please me more than seeing everyone using the same devices and operating system. Because, that’s what we’re all rooting for right? Everyone using the same thing?
Even if everyone was on Android (Unlikely) there would still be huge differentiation due to completely different look and feel of the different OEM’s versions of Android, not to mention the Number of Homebrew Roms and modification options. You could have the advantage of everyone being on one OS (app comparability and interoperability) without everyone’s phone having to look or act the same. You wouldn’t get that if iOS was dominant.
I’m against dominance of any kind.
I’m not a stooge. =)
Oddly enough I am against dominance since competition is good for development. Fortunately all android OEM’s are in competition with each other.
Hardware competition yes. I would hardly call Android Skins software competition!
If it’s not total competition, it’s not competition.
Neither touchwiz nor sense are skins. Both carry extensions to Android such as better camera software and various other things that the open source base doesn’t have.
The market really needs a strong 3rd player. I never thought I would congratulate Microsoft but there you go. Nokia has a special place in my heart so I hope this continues upwards…
