We’ve been on record saying that your brand new iPhone 5 doesn’t need a case, that it should always stay naked. But we get it, some of you guys like the peace of mind of protection. Grandmas love plastic on their couches! But what happens when your iPhone case actually scratches your iPhone? GASPSHRIEKFREAKTHEEFFOUT. It could happen.
Consumerist recently reported about a guy slapping on a super stylish Slider Incase on his new iPhone 5 only to see a gnarly, streaking scratch on the side of his “protected” iPhone when he removed the case. Here’s what Ilya, the poor guy who now has a scratch iPhone:
Last week I decided to take it off to clean off some dirt from around the edges and noticed a scratch on the side of the phone. Couldn’t believe my eyes since I knew there was no damage before I put on the case and couldn’t figure out where it came from. Closely inspecting the case from the inside, I noticed that one inside part had a piece of plastic sticking out. It corresponds with the scratch on my phone. Seems like it was a defect in the case which actually ended up scratching the phone.
The good thing about using a case is that you can put it right back on and pretend like nothing happened. But you know what? You can do that after using your iPhone naked for a few months too. Then you get to enjoy the way the iPhone is supposed to be used! There’s no need to immediately slap on a case, even a case doesn’t always protect you. [Consumerist]

For this reason, i’ve been looking for one of the all-leather slide-in cases, one where it isn’t a clamshell around the phone, but some corner straps. Anything but an iphone 5, no problem, iphone 5, they’re taking forever to come out!
I only want one so my iphone looks like my ipad’s baby

I had a leather slide in case, it was quite tight, the very first time I used it, it put a huge scratch across my screen. the stictching on the lip was so sharp when I slide it in/out it cut into the screen !

i say you buy an aluminium phone, you deserve all the scratches you get, and this is not just apple hate (although that is a bonus feature

They also don’t make them out of aluminium. Maybe Apple’s next phone will be made out of ballistics grade ceramics and come with a free kevlar pouch to sit in?
At least they’d be innovative again!
And someone, somewhere, will still manage to scratch it within 2 hours of purchase.
Motorola Razr phones have kevlar backs.
HTC Titan here with an Aluminium back and not a single scratch on it after 15mths or so. No case as naked as the day it was born

I had a bumper case on an iPhone 4 and it completely destroyed the outer bezel of the phone, it looked like I had chucked it on the floor every day for the past year!
I had one of those Apple bumpers back when I had an iPhone 4 and it scratched the metal to fuck.
I’m going to stick to the Samsung Galaxy series unless Samsung drop the ball, Plastic is a much better material for a phone. Glass is only good for letting light through and trapping heat.
i have an unofficial bumper on my 5. It is scratched all over the edges, on all sides.
Same. Once I get the first scratch on my phone though, I can relax and use it like a tool again rather than wrapping it in cotton wool and worrying about it all the time.
Exactly. I have always been quite OCD about my gadgets, so it was quite a cathartic moment.
That may be the fault of Incase as much as it is Apple’s design; EVERY product I’ve ever got from them has failed me in some way. I really don’t trust their products.

OT – I had a leather case for my S2, was useless when I closed my car door, so I bought a Ballistic case. Might be encased in plastic and rubber but I learnt the hard way… Ain’t got time for that no more…

I, by no means an Apple hater (even though I had to get iPhone and iPad for my parents as gifts) but really think scratches on metal is rather arty than a SCAR! I mean isn’t a bit like jeans? The more you wear the better it feels? Or am I the only one thinks that way..may be
It’s all fun and games until you scratch the screen!
That hurts! I used screen protector for my Desire S but took it off because screen looks much crispier without the layer, I guess its a trade off. Having said that for a clumsy chap both screen and phone case might be a must.
