Can you imagine the conversation you would have with a child, hell, a tween, about this coffee table? “You see, son. Before the cloud and usb sticks. Before hard drives and iPhones and Androids. Before the iPod and even before the CD player, there was something called the floppy disk. And it stored 1.44MB. Yeah, I know. You sext bigger files than that. But the thing is, people actually used the floppy disk like we use flash drives today!”
Tween: So why would someone make a coffee table that’s a floppy disk? If someone made a usb stick coffee table, I’d think they were dumb. Was the disk actually floppy? What the hell is floppy, anyway?
You: Well there was a real floppy floppy disk before this floppy disk but that’s a different story entirely.
Tween: I don’t get it. Can I play with your iPad?
You: I WILL BUY THIS COFFEE TABLE AND YOU WILL USE IT DAMMIT. *meekly* Or just think of it as a normal coffee table with some silver shit on it.
Tween: How about that iPad?
And scene. The floppy table was made by Berlin art, design and architecture duo Axel van Exel and Marian Neulant of Neulant van Exel. The stainless steel part of the table actually conceals a compartment to put remotes and stuff. Genius! See more of the Floppy Table here. [Floppy Table via Laughing Squid]

Actually what the kid will say is “Dad, why have you bought a table that looks like the Microsoft Office ‘Save’ icon?”
Also, it’s “End Scene”, not “And Scene”.
That’s a 720k disk, if they bring out a 1.44Mb next year will it have more storage for remotes? They could also make a trampoline shaped like a 5.25″ disk.
Wouldn’t the hole in the middle be a problem?
Hmm, it would certainly make it interesting, and add a whole extra level of skill and peril!
What would you make for 8″ Floppies?
Gazebo, with a hole for a patio heater?
Or a big trampoline.
I knew what it was…
Congrats.
i want one!
Didn’t those floppy disks have a “floppy” disk inside of them as well?
Yes.
and i give you the punchcard table

They seem a lot bigger than I recall they were.
that was the 6mb version
I’m only 21. Does it make me old that I remember using these? =|
I tried sticking my photo album onto that table, and I could only fit 2 pictures on it
Can you slide the metal bit back to reveal the tape?
if slides back to reveal a storage space for remotes and ting.
I remember, back in the day, I had a teacher who picked up someone’s floppy disk and said,
“Oh, you’ve got some nice photos on there”
and a girl blurted out,
“oh my god, can you really see the photos?”
Ahh technology. And dumb people.
Back in ’97 I was teaching Business Admin and one of my trainees dropped a floppy on the floor, it took a while to convince him that his work hadn’t fallen out of the hole in the middle.
Not the brightest candle, nor sharpest crayon, etc…
Now those take me back, my first sony digital camera had a floppy in for storage think i got about 10 images on them..
I wouldnt have got through my collegue course without those things..
