You’ve seen the pose. One or two phones or tablets standing straight up. Another leaning up against the first at an angle. And somehow, they’re all the exact same height. ARRRRGHHH. You learn this crap in junior school, right? Reddit pointed how absurd this seems earlier today.
But hold on! Another redditor, bananaseepeep, illustrates that this might just be an optical illusion:
thaskabus drew it up as well:
So that complicates things a little. Is it really just a trick of the rounded edges, with the phones actually being the right size? Does that explanation wash with Pythagoras? Why is this so annoying when you think it’s wrong, since it doesn’t affect us at all? I need someone smarter than me — and better at Photoshop — to figure this out. [Reddit]

My best advice is to put it to one side and move on, because where it all comes from
Is a mystery, It’s like the changing of the seasons and the tides of the sea, but heres the one thats driving me berserk, Why do only fools and horses work?
This’ll be up there as a finalist for the comment competition!
Wonderful. This is better than walking the dinosaur and the fresh prince.
Bravo sir!
Say they are leaning at 15 degrees from the vertical. That would mean the vertical height would be 97% of that at vertical (100*cos15), which I’m guessing is going to look pretty much identical once you factor the rounded edges.
It’s going to be so close to 100% height, it’s not going to matter.
well the only way to fix this is to take the photos yourself and send them to each company.. post us your results and we will judge you..
Little known fact: Pythagoras was a pig.
As in bacon?
Or sexist…?
Or policeman (sorry Matt)?
Or Pretty Ingenious Greek ?
As in bacon. It was a Young Ones quote and I was hoping someone would be old enough to get it..
I didn’t remember that – just SPG the hamster!
Old enough but haven’t seen Young Ones for decades!
Couldn’t resist…
”
NEIL: Oh, so I’m a pig now too, am I?
RICK: Yes, yes! Now, get licking, Porky!
NEIL: [picks cups up, stands] Well, I don’t mind being a pig, cause, for your information, pigs are really intelligent, actually.
RICK: Oh?
NEIL: Yeah, like dolphins.
RICK: Oh, so they are, are they? Well, tell me, Neil. Who invented the internal combustion engine? Was it Porky the Pig? No, it was Lincoln Rawls, wasn’t it?! And the Theory of Relativity. Was Pythagoras a pig? No, he was a Greek, wasn’t he? So tell me, Neil. You’re the expert. [grabs the cups] What’s the major piggie contribution to civilization?
NEIL: Ummm…. [pause, thinking]
RICK: It’s bacon, isn’t it? Bacon and rooling around in the mud. Look out, Michaelangelo, here comes the new piggie Renaissance!
[Vyvyan bumps into Rick as he comes downstairs, a stick of dynamite strapped to his head]

I know need to find the Young Ones to watch
In the world of marketing, physics is merely an option.
I tried this with my Galaxy Note. Put it up against a vertical surface, made a mark, then pulled the bottom out a bit to resemble the photos. Top was approx 6mm lower. Marketing guys – YOU ARE LIARS! (now, was that news to anyone?)
Liking the empirical method there!
Knowing how you guys at Giz love gifs… http://s10.postimage.org/m5itlopa1/sliding_ipad.gif
Pythagoras was wrong… I wouldn’t as him he’d lose his literal shit.
