At first glance this beautiful espresso maker from CB Industries looks like a proposed NASA spacecraft design from the mid-1950s. But instead of dropping astronauts on the moon, it’s only designed to drip coffee into a cup, while looking sleek in the process.
Polished stainless steel lets the Jules’ spherical body and pointy legs shine (and collect untold amounts of fingerprints) and beneath its highly reflective dome you’ll find a 1.4-liter water reservoir and other mechanical bits that let it serve up a hot cup of joe. And the other obvious clue that this wasn’t produced by NASA? Its £1,000 price tag, which puts it well beyond the agency’s current budget constraints.

I am the first to defend Giz writers but eSpresso does not have a FLIPPIN X!
Also came here to say this. Even a spell checker would have caught that one.

Any excuse really.
Dammit, ninja’d! Kinda! Should have checked link. I applaud you, BritishAcademic – you are a gentleman and a scholar…academic.
It can’t be said enough times.
So here it is again: ESPRESSO NOT EXPRESSO.
Or else: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3y0CD2CoCs
to echo the other comment please dont say expresso, its espresso, and that plastic portafilter tells me its almost certainly going to make a crap cup, save yourself some money and get a rancilio silvia, and with the change you can buy a decent grinder (and probably still spend under a grand)
Or a Gaggia Classic!
no argument there, fantastic machine, i know its what i use, id have a silvia if i could have afforded it at the time but i couldnt so i got the classic (no point in upgrading to a silvia really, my next upgrade will be a plumbed in machine) its even better if you mod it with the steam arm from the silvia which fits right on
Couldn’t agree more – I put the Silia arm on it about a month ago and haven’t looked back. The milk is fan-fricking-tastic now!
Or my favourite combo, La Pavoni Europiccola & a Mazzer Mini grinder..
not much beats a mazzer, ive got a super jolly myself but as nice as the pavoni looks ive never been able to get on with lever machines myself but i have tasted some fine cups made with one
Would you recommend the Mazzer Mini with or without the doser?
if youre just using it at home its probably best to avoid the doser, mine has one but it only really works if you have it full and you dont want to grind any more than you need (coffee is good for about 15 mins after you grind it) ive gotten used to knowing what size the grind pile that builds up is when it hits 14.5g and then i have to hit the doser several times until its all in the basket.
id have got a non doser model if id bought it new but i got it second hand at an absolute bargain price (85 quid! they had no idea what they were selling so i gleefully snapped it up)
Nice! That’s a bargain! That’s what I was thinking too… I have the machine (Gaggia Classic) but sadly only a cheap little burr grinder, which isn’t consistent and despite my modifications requires me to do the Weiss distribution every time. I’m hoping a ‘proper’ grinder will sort me out…this machine has so much more in it, just need the tools to bring it out and god-help-me-I-need-more-money-gaaaahhh
Are Gizmodo now trolling their readers in the same way the the Daily Mail website does?
No surer way to get comments in an article (and therefore page impressions) than to type expresso in an article about coffee.
Just sayin’
