If you thought the Galaxy Note II was pushing the envelope on size, you’ve got another thing coming. A executive from Huawei has been caught on camera showing off the company’s upcoming 6.1-inch 1080p Ascend Mate, a truly mammoth phablet.
Expected to be officially unveiled at this year’s CES, the Ascend Mate is rumoured to have a 1.8GHz HiSilicon K3V3 quad-core chip and a 4,000mAh battery to power its ludicrous 6.1-inch, 361ppi screen. Huawei’s Richard Yu was showing off the device at a Huawei store in Guangzhou, and the video shows just how big the thing is, a full .6 inches larger than the Galaxy Note II and creeping up on the 7-inch tablet form factor. Where will this hugification finally end? Apparently not at half a foot. [Engadget]

Oh God, Here Come the Private Security Drones
Oh for the Love of God, Not Another Bloody Standards War
Wouldn’t be so bad if the bezel wasn’t so thick. However, even with zero bezel, 6 inches is way to big for a phone.
If you were someone who currently used a tablet on a daily basis you might well like the idea of saving yourself carrying a tablet and a phone. The Note and Note 2 have sold well enough (despite the many snide comments from Giz writers) that Huawei think it’s worth going after a slice of this market. If there is a market it will sell, if not, it won’t. Surely that’s better than being told you don’t need a phone screen bigger than 3.5″ (until the person who said that dies and the company concerned can change it’s mind).
Sharp and witty as usual! Keep up the good job Darrel!
There is a point where it becomes impractical to carry both
However there is a point where it becomes impractical to combine the two making phone calls just becomes a chore
The galaxy note 3 is rumoured to also be a 6.3″ beast.
It’s a small tablet that you can make phone calls on. Seriously, Giz, stop being so thick-headed about it.
There is a market for this and that market is growing. The galaxy tab 7.7 3g can make phone calls and its a great device. Personally, I rarely make phone calls and I use my phone as a media player/games console. I currently have the galaxy note 1 and I won’t go back to anything smaller. I just hope they minimize the bezel so the bigger screen will not affect the overall size of the phone much. +1 for the bigger battery and I hope it has a micro sd lot.
Got to say, not a fan of the phablet area of tech, but i can understand it for people who only want to carry one device, rather than a phone and tablet, but that’s where i think the Asus Padfone excels completely
5 millions of Galaxy Note 2 units sold in 2 weeks* says it is a good idead to make suche devices.

I rest my case.
p.s. I dont have one and probably won’t, but my taste doesn’t have the power of changing facts like the aforementioned (my english word of the week).
True, it will also bring a healthy competition, much needed amongst phablet makers.
But will it have a stylus, because that’s one of the major reasons I got my Note II (which I thoroughly enjoy owning).
Six inches does seem like an odd size, perhaps because no one else has gone there yet. Everything new seems odd to begin with.
I still like my phones to come in under four inches, although among newer handsets those seem to be an oddity these days too.
I like my phones under 4 inches, that way I don’t get jealous…
