Last week’s Shooting Challenge was all about the camera in your pocket: the mobile phone. The brief was simple and gave you masses of creative freedom — shoot an image on your mobile phone and if you so wish to, edit it using one (or many) of the apps available for your camera phone of choice. And let me just say, you didn’t disappoint..
We had a bumper crop this time round, with many of you submitting a few images. So thanks to everyone who submitted their photos. Now, the only problem with lots of images and no ‘overall brief’ is that it makes it even harder for me to pick an overall winner. So, this week, I’m going to be controversial and say “The Winners Are…”
In alphabetical order, congratulations to:
- Andrew Wilson for his ‘Ice Heart’ and ‘Losing Streak’ images:
- Angus Holmes for the ‘Macro Fly’, ‘Miniature Waterfall’ and ‘Harrow Hill’ photos
- Nick Cresswell for ‘Priory Park’
Congratulations guys; some great and very different images there.
Honourable mentions must go to the following:
- Amanda Johnstone
- Drew Smith
- Hana Burkonova
- Henry Downing
- Ian Taylor
- Mhatti 3000 (I don’t think that’s his real name)
- Parul Kundrai
As usual, you’ll find all the images over on our Flickr page, so go check them out. Which images are your favourites? Do let us know in the comments section below.
Thanks again to everyone that took the time to capture the world around them. There will be another Shooting Challenge next week; if the weather stays as cold as it is at the moment, you’ll need to wrap up warm as you’ll need to be outside for the next challenge.

Well Done Nick! Time to get a commenter account so you can bask in your glory!
Yay. A winner is me! (kind of).
I also really liked the padlock one by HanaBurkonova.
Congratulations
– it was a difficult one to judge this week; down to the fact there wasn’t a brief as such.
What was the equipment used to capture the macro fly?
I just used my IPhone 5 and Camera+. Can’t believe the image came out so well!
Mine seem to be MIA on Flikr
( That makes me a Sad Panda.
Which one of mine did you think it was worth an honourable mention Martin?
Off the top of my head, I can’t remember – let me look at your submissions again and I’ll tell you.
Lovely shot of Harrow, brings back great memories of bunking off to the Castle when I was at college (not the school!) in my formative years. It’s also such a contrast to the rest of the borough!
Thanks for the encouragement
Ney bother, what app did you use to get the clouds like that?
Snapseed. Such an amazing app
Jesus the judging gets worse every week. How can you possibly say the ice heart is on a par with Harrow Hill?
i know right
Luke, photography, like art, music, movies, books, and television is subjective – one man’s pleasure is another’s pain. I’m not a fan of most modern art; but I get it. I may not like it, but I take the time to understand what the artist is doing.
All of the ‘winning’ images this week are different; they all have positives and negatives. The ‘ice heart’ image is well composed tells a story that can mean many things to people. Andrew also took the time to give his images titles – to give them a story. If you don’t like the image, that’s fine; no problem!
Again, I find myself telling you that the Gizmodo UK Shooting Challenges are a bit of FUN!
If you’re not happy with the Shooting Challenges (this isn’t the first time you’ve moaned about one aspect of them or another), don’t enter, don’t look at the post, go off and explore the Internet. Find another photography competition to enter; there are bloody hundreds of them out there.
/rantover
i might be getting this wrong, but i think Lukep means that ‘Harrow Hill’ is particularly terrible.
It doesn’t really matter to be honest; my response was aimed at Luke’s ‘Jesus the judging gets worse every week’ comment.
No no I love the Harrow HIll one!
“one man’s pleasure is another’s pain. ”
Exactly so if I don’t agree with you I’m allowed to say so.
” If you don’t like the image, that’s fine; no problem!”
Precisely, so why do a big long rant?
“If you’re not happy with the Shooting Challenges (this isn’t the first time you’ve moaned about one aspect of them or another), don’t enter, don’t look at the post, go off and explore the Internet”
So you are telling Giz UK readers to leave the site? I have read Giz UK from day 1 and log on multiple times a day. I am also a photographer of sorts so I love these competitions. I take part in nearly every single one of them. But the judging is inconsistent. IF you can’t take criticism then don’t do the competition.
Did you actually read what you wrote as your first point? You criticised his opinion, he’s asking you not to.
If you have said that you liked the Harrow Hill one and that the ice shot was no where near as good, then that would have been your opinion, which you are entitled to.
Be nice to Martin, he does this for us and we should appreciate it, otherwise it just wouldn’t happen.
Disagreeing with the results of the competition and saying ‘Jesus the judging gets worse every week’ are quite different things.
I’m not telling anyone to leave the site; I’m merely stating that if you don’t like it, don’t look at it. You’re free to make your own choices.
The Shooting Challenges are a bit of FUN.
I’m not going to argue about it; life is too short.
And I can take criticism, it’s my job
The judging = Results of the competition
They go hand in hand.
You keep saying its FUN but it is a competition. Competition brings competitiveness.
Guys lets be honest, Andrew already said this but Martin doesn’t have to do this, he could just stop right away. Instead let’s just go along with the fact that the judging is his opinion of the photos and others may have different ones.
The next Shooting Challenge will be judged by someone different – Winston, our tortoise.
I’m perfectly happy with the judging right now
But there might be a reason for that…
Anyway Winston would only pick photos of lettuce….
Winston? Fuck that, what does he know? He’s a Tortoise.
This competition isn’t a shell of what it used to be!

Beh. My picture’s not on Flikr
