The first teaser poster for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot sequel, Into Darkness, has finally been released, and it certainly doesn’t look good for ol’London town. Destruction, smoke, rubble, Benedict Cumberbatch, and, err, the Gherkin. Ouch.
Apparently there’s a brand new trailer on the way too (isn’t there always?), which should be here any minute. I don’t know about you, but as reboot’s go, the first Star Trek was well up there with the likes of Batman Begins. In fact, judging by this poster, it looks like there might be a little more than just a passing resemblance to Nolan’s Batman trilogy, and that can only be a good thing, even if London ends up getting destroyed in the process. Thank you for blowing up the image! I was trying to notice the London Eye which was in the picture but couldn’t identify it on a lower resolution. I saw the rest: Gherkin, Shard, etc.
A lot of film sequels are trying their versions of The Dark Knight. Even directors like Sam Mendes, of American Beauty and Skyfall, attributes his take on Skyfall being possible through films like Nolan’s TDK. It’s certainly a reasonable way to try to measure up the 2nd/3rd film in a franchise.
/Octopalm. Because even 5, 6 or 7 facepalms suffice for that comment.
‘In an interview with The Playlist, Skyfall director Sam Mendes said he was “directly inspired” by Nolan’s work on The Dark Knight. “In terms of what [Nolan] achieved, specifically The Dark Knight, the second movie, what it achieved, which is something exceptional. It was a game changer for everybody,” said Mendes.
The film-maker added “… and what Nolan proved was that you can make a huge movie that is thrilling and entertaining and has a lot to say about the world we live in, even if, in the case with The Dark Knight, it’s not even set in our world.’

“Abrams’ model for the sequel to his “Star Trek” reboot is “The Dark Knight.” Abrams looked at the way that the Joker in that movie erased all memories of earlier Jokers and transformed Christopher Nolan’s Batman series into something darker, deeper and more iconic that its origin story ever indicated it could be.”
Given that skyline, I don’t think you can say London is “Totally Destroyed”, most of the large buildings seem unscathed. Perhaps they just blew up Stratford, which means it just looks how it did before the Olympics
The 2012 or 2256/2260 Olympics?
2012 obviously. The 2256 Games are going to be in Sunny Antarctica and 2260 on the Moon, the IOC has already signed the contracts for this.
I was going to say it could be a crashed ship of some description but there are some plumes of smoke emanating from some of the buildings in the background as well, maybe the fall out of some battle taking place above earth. either way would be good to see some of earths other future cities not just San Francisco in a Star Trek film
Benedict Cumberpatch, blowing up London, nice to see Hollywood’s still got a thing for good old England. No sign of big Ben though, that’s usually the first thing to get blown up.
given the position of the London Eye it’s hidden by the forth building from the left
I’m mostly hoping Cumberbatch will provide us with all-time King of the English-villain-in-Hollywood-movies
Seems to be the recursive plot line, a slight left over from the Revolutionary war. Still, you have to admit we make pretty good villains. Albeit the Yanks always win.
Villains just sound more menacing when they have a ‘foreign’ accent.
At least, what’s ‘foreign’ to Americans…
Couldn’t they have come up with a more original idea for the poster?
I mean…

Good to see that after 1000′s of years, the gherkin is still standing!
I’m sure after WW3 they rebuilt it or it was unscathed.
Especially after London was hit by several nukes during WW3, I though there were no famous buildings left from before the Warp 1 flight.
23rd Century 3D printers rock!
I assume you mean 100′s, not 1000′s?
The joys of being a blanket counter in my job is that you can be crap with numbers and no one notices…unlike when commenting on the interweb- DOH! ^_^
Given the all-over-the-place positioning of the known buildings (like the Gherkin), one could assume that London had already been destroyed and rebuilt, albeit slightly differently.
Worrying trend of destroying London in box office films – G.I. Joe’s (Tatum belated) second instalment sees it wobbled to destruction.
And then there’s Skyfall. Blowing up the tube is just going to cause yet more delays.
To be fair a lot of big-budget 90s films that devastated cities used to be mostly American cities like LA, NYC, etc. I welcome that this time London goes tits up!
Damn it, the rest of the world has lost its immunity to invasion and destruction!
The city has become a breeding ground for suffering and injustice. It is beyond saving and must be allowed to die.
abrams already took Star Trek in to the darkness with that chav ‘look at the explosions ans lens flare’ crap he called the first Star Trek movie he made.
I’ve heard a rumour that Cumberbatch’s character travels back in time to Croydon and instigates the 2011 riots. That’s actually a furniture store he’s standing in
No trainers in the 23rd century, y’see?
well i dont care about all the influences and shit, i just wanna see this movie
It looks like a real good start, especially if they got that Cameron in all that destruction – Star Wars: Insurrection.
Fiction, it can be such a tease at times.
*Star Trek: Isurrection – they are different right?
Star Trek: Insurrection is correct.
I have no idea what Star Wars: Insurrection is.
Pissed again? Tut tut.
Let’s say ‘intoxicated’…
