The magic behind it all—of course—is CGI, but motion capture and a variety of augmented reality shooting techniques makes the work behind the scenes almost as cool as the finished product. I hate CGI it looks so fake and nasty, it doesn’t impress anymore like it did either, just ends up standing out and makes me think I’m watching a game. The problem is they use too much CGI now, where it is all made from CGI. The best movies is where they have made the thing in real life and just use CGI to enhance it.
Imagine if they made Jurassic Park today (I know they used CGI for some), that T-Rex would be all CGI and so nasty looking instead of actually making the thing like they did.
The thing about puppets and real constructed effects is they (with a decent budget) stand up to the passing of time. Imagine how bad todays CGI will look in a few decades, it’ll be like watching pong and trying to imagine it’s real tennis.
As for CGI animals, they just make my skin crawl.
The Best Movies is where the story is good and you don’t notice the CGI. Have you seen Zodiac? there is a surprisingly a large amount of CGI in it but you don’t notice it.
Exactly. If someone can say ‘oh the CGI looks XYZ’, then you’ve part-way failed. The mere fact they noticed it was CG is enough.
I dunno about that. We all know Gollum is CG but he is incredible.
I saw this on Saturday and loved it. Great to be back on Middle-earth after 10 years or so. Again like most said the CGI was almost unnoticeable.
