Not super into cartography? Add some lasers into the mix and see what happens. This video features a laser digging into some metal to create a map of Atlanta, Georgia and it’s mesmerising to watch it come into being before your eyes.
Laser-cutting isn’t quite that fast; this video is sped up to 4x, but that just makes it all the better to watch. You can find the maps this setup makes on Etsy, and maybe pick one up of your home town. Unless you don’t living in a big city, in which case maybe it’s time to go get some lasers of your own. To be fair, you do get laser cutters that fast. That might not be one of them, but they exist and are amazing to watch in action.
I don’t living in a big city, but I have an architecturally inclined other half who might like one of these for Christmas. Looks like you can request custom items though…
I really hope he owns his own cutter, otherwise at £95 per map he’s not really making a great deal of profit on these things.
Most cutting places charge about £1 per minute on average, and even though it’s only 2-3mm mountboard he’s cutting, that’s not a quick job by any means, given the size of the thing.
Yup, thought so.. he’s definitely got his own machine, as on his San Francisco map video, he says it took about 2 hours.. any cutting service would be charging at least £100-120 to do that, yet he’s only charging people £95 for the finished product. Bargain!
