Last Monday, we invited (with no small amount of trepidation) the web’s best comedians to bring the cream of their acerbic wit and banter to bear on our site, with the promise of a spanking new phone for the comedic gem of the week. Well, time’s up, the phone lines are now closed; the winner of X Factor 2012 is…oh wait, sorry, wrong programme.
Following a long and careful late-night judging session, fuelled by caffeine and poor puns, we’ve finally come to a conclusion. Drumroll please, the Commenting King (or Queen) is:
A certain British Academic, with his harsh but funny commentary on the best of the week’s news. Well played, Sir. To the victor the spoils, in this case a shiny new Sony Xperia Go.
It’s not about the winning though, it’s the taking part that counts, right? Whilst British Academic triumphed in the comedy stakes this week, there were some other notable entries:
Congrats to our winner, but everyone else need not despair — our third and final Crimbo giveaway will be live next Monday, and this one doesn’t require cutting wit (well not much, anyway).

Who Won Our Crimbo Photoshop Challenge?
Win a Sony Xperia Go, In Giz's Crimbo Commenting Challenge
Win a Sony Xperia S In Giz's Crimbo Photoshop Challenge
At this point can I just say I was going to give the phone to charity.
I was going to play with it for a few weeks then give it to a friend who could do with a new phone but cant afford one.
*Presses play on Take That – Rule the World*
I was going to give it to Spatchmo
After Smashing it up and Suspending it in Acrylic?
Could have done, could have done. The other option was to put the sealed box in the resin, then you could have an enjoyable Christmas hacking it out. It would be like those archaeology toys where you have to dig out a dinosaur.
Wife would have probably been happy that there was something to keep me occupied over the Xmas period, i do so get in her hair when i’m all het up in the bad weather and bored and their are only so many times you can play monopoly. Oh well, it wasn’t to be, Irononreverse. Thanks for trying though, lets see what next weeks chalenge brings us.
Phones 4 Africa to help dem ring and text people dead good.
Well Done BritishAcademic!
I have to say, if there was a prize for effort/quantity, you’d have romped home in first place.
Faint praise alert.
It’s like winning the “special” prize for having a good go at it.
Cheers Chris, maybe i’ll win something one day
My best post was a few months back about 3/4 down the page.

Though i thought my Only Fools and Horses lyrics were inspired also, can i say that about myself? well i did, so balls to convention!
Also, the Commenting Guideline link is Broken, could do with looking at i guess?
Yup, it’s always been broken, because, err, I haven’t found the time to actually write guidelines yet. That’s not to say we don’t have guidelines, of course…you just have to guess ‘em
Ha, Brilliant! Imagine the freedom of being able to create our own rules?
Rule 17. Each comment has to start with 3 consecutive lyrics from any ABBA song, each reply to said comment has to include 3 different, consecutive lyrics from the same ABBA song.
I might just work an ABBA reference into the guidelines, just for you, Spatch.
Topical. I like it.
“Following a long and careful late-night judging session” I thought entries were supposed to close at 9am today? All that last minute witticism wasted.
That’s what I thought. Methinks it was written like that to add drama.
It was probably more like, “Following a quick whizz through the entries before lunch”
“following a random click through our server logs after a heavy lunchtime session”
PS. I am only joking, don’t want it to sound as though I begrudge the worthy winner.
They did — we considered the bulk of the comments last night, and then kept an eye on the comments for any last-minute gems of banter.
So, the cover up begins. This is as bad as that thing with the gnome.
What about the juggling? Gizmodo.co.uk is just one bald faced lie after another…
The gnome. oh god, don’t mention the gnome.
Somebody say gnome? How is the gnome by the way? Is it still suspended above Kat’s desk?
The gnome had to be cut down and returned to its rightful place on my desk, to the left of the monitor. I kept bumping my head on it whenever I stood up!
The gnomegate was a indeed a shameful bit, and by bit I mean huge, stain on Giz UK record.
Indeed it was, dented my faith in humamkind considerably, don’t think I’ve recovered yet.
humamkind?
Well, at least I was the foil for ispy’s honourable mention…..!
True dat. I think you get the digital equivalent of an assist.
Glad to help
honoured!
I had a proper giggle at your one good sir..
by far my favorite of the three! :’)
A worthy winner.
He’ll be on Have I Got News For You next week.
Ha, somehow that’d be a better prize than a phone eh?
Only if you’re on Paul Merton’s team!
Given that the last person pleased to be on HIGNFY was on it solely to have his hair laughed at, I might be tempted to pass.
Must admit, wish I could be as witty as the chaps on there. They’re bloody hilarious.
Well I’m going to put it out there…..I don’t think that was the funniest or wittiest or best bit of banter I’ve read here over the last few days, but maybe that’s just me.
Anyway, congratulations to the winner as picked by the judges.
I agree. I put rather more effort into my ice shelf feghoot.
Still, I’m not going to say no to a free phone, ‘specially as my last one just died.
well at least you want the prize
Hmmm… It’s all subjective im sure. But that won? Really? That’s like giving giving EL James the Nobel prize for literature. No offence britishacademic, you’re a standup fellar and fair do’s for winning. But, that comment was hardly the funniest/wittiest comment on here by a long shot. Especially, considering the dubious, racially offensive nature of the original post that comment was in.
Spatchmo’s my winner. Have some chrimbo cheer as a prize guvna. You been roobeed i tell ya.
Thanks Token, what more can i say, Merry Christmas back at ya!
Finally my profile pic has made it to the main page of Gizmodo! YES! I MADE IT YAY!
Every single comment on this page has a fecking star! Just thought I’d buck the trend.
Bucking the trend would be someone NOT giving you a star just to throw your comment out of whack…
Can’t like or reply to it either as that adds to the kudos!
The prize should have been an iphone and Darrel should have won. He should also be forced to use it for a year.
