Google’s about to be hit by a huge privacy storm in the UK, thanks to a group legal case that claims it ignored privacy rules to track up to 10 million iPhone, iPad and Safari users.
Dan Tench, a lawyer a London law firm Olswang, is taking the case to Google on behalf of a small initial sample group of upset users. The Guardian reports him as saying: “This is the first time Google has been threatened with a group claim over privacy in the UK. It is particularly concerning how Google circumvented security settings to snoop on its users. One of the things about Google is that it is so ubiquitous in our lives and if that’s its approach then it’s quite concerning.”
The law firm claims some 10 million Apple users in the UK may have a right to launch privacy invasion claims, over the way Apple stored ad-friendly cookies on devices without consent and is therefore guilty of some form of internet use tracking. It could be the new PPI. [Guardian]

With all my iDevices I know I am in this group of 10 mill.
Even a toilet paper company has Chief Security Office, Apple doesn’t.
Yeah but it’s because their machines don’t get viruses…

Sorry, I don’t read tech sites that aren’t Apple Insider, I don’t trust them. They often lie because they’re jealous of Apple.
This is a true story.
Also don’t worry I’m being horribly sarcastic!
I’m hoping you’re being sarcastic.
I am, it’s all a hilarious ruse!
Oh god, incoming 12 months of text message spam “You have £2,124.42 waiting for you in Google privacy infringement settlements, reply MONEY to find out more”
MONEY
MONIES
or visit GPIclaims.com
I’d love to see how they calculate the “damages” that resulted from Google’s actions.
My prediction is Google pays a few million, Olswang takes 80% of it in fees and the 10m Safari users get £1 each.
Seems legit.
Sounds like a fair fee for having to use Safari
Please don’t let there be “Google privacy infringement settlements” adverts constantly on TV!
Why do people freak out about Google or Facebook privacy issues and yet completely ignore all the spying that governments do on their own citizens?
Valid point, however Google and Facebook uses them commercially where the latter is only for our own protection. Being said that, Government is notorious in leaking personal data, NHS is a prime example.
Do you really believe all this ‘for the children’, ‘national security’ nonsense? Governments don’t care so much about that as they do monitoring what we do and controlling what information we have access to.
You don’t have much faith in Government do you
Try living in a third world for a better view.
Also, you can make a choice of what you put on social media or whether you even use the services. You can do nothing about government and law enforcement spying.
Somebody’s been watching too much Utopia.
I wonder if these are the same people that click the box to say they have read the terms and conditions when they haven’t (not that I read them either).
you’re right you know. I seem to remember a few months ago google removed all its “numerous” terms of use policies and replaced them with one “simpler” one. Wanna bet that there’s an ambiguous line in there covering their ass. (no I haven’t read it either)
……invasion claims, over the way Apple stored ad-friendly cookies on devices without consent……
Should that say google, not apple
