What country do you think has the best internet? Hint: not us.
Every quarter, Akami ranks countries based on their broadband speeds, specifically how many megabits per second. In the latest report, number one has an average peak speed of 54.1 megabits per second. At that rate you could download an entire feature film in just a few minutes. The UK isn’t even in the top 10. So who’s the Usain Bolt of internet speeds?
Wait for it.

Gmail SMS Brings Email to Dumbphones In Countries With Crappy Internet
Some of the countries in the top 10 are quite surprising, like Romania and Bulgaria (or maybe I’m being quite ignorant?)
Yeah, you are. I have Romanian gaming friends, it’s not like they are 3rd world countries.
Lol romania is definitely a shit hole though. Bulgaria is on the rise but meh..i’m with Sabashe.
It’s very hard to get an accurate picture though. I have a friend who has moved to Bulgaria and they would say the opposite.
But it’s no different than having a couple of people come to the UK from abroad, 1 takes virgin fibre and the other takes sky, with todays news helping enhance my point. 1 of the upstarts would say our internet is pretty fast, the other would have a dreadful speed.
Haha. Romania&Bulgaria are dumpsters. With not many accessing the interweb simulatneously, there is no congestion whatsoever. Also, Philippines has a shit load of gamers. I think “gaming friends” is not the best scientific measure for development. Try GDP.
Sure they’re not 3rd world countries, but I still wouldn’t have placed them as having one of the fastest average internet speeds in the world…
I heard it’s because those countries developed their infrastructure later than others. That meant they started off more up to date, where as here in the UK we have to painstakingly upgrade what we’ve got.
“here in the UK we have to painstakingly upgrade what we’ve got.” I don’t think we have got to do this, just haven’t found a government that feels updating old equipment is worth doing for a country that is always on the forefront of technology – let me think…
It’s all those sexy sexy webcams. Progress is driven by the lucrative sex cam industry.
I wouldn’t know anything about that though.
Ah that explains it! I always did wonder why the quality from those countries was always so much better…I mean…uh…yeah…
Bulgaria has super cheap fibre… why? They run all their cables above ground. So all the main cities have huge customer penetration.
I did a market study on it for work… (looking at valuing a start up internet provider) and basically everyone pirates the shit out of the internet cause you can literally.. splice the cable going into the building instead of having it run through the exchange. (I don’t know how it works exactly as this was circa 2007 when we did the report).
Oh cool, did not know that!
I’m on 60mbit cable.
So nyah nyah to Hong Kong Phooey.
120mb here
I always get above 11MB/s
It would be more useful if it also showed penetration, i.e. what % of the pop has broadband.
Of cours e places like Hong Kong and Singapore are bound to fare well being highly urban, don’t have pesky country folk dragging the speeds down,
Isn’t it sort of cheating to include Hong Kong? It’s part of China right?
I know they do often treat it separately for this sort of thing, since it has such a high level of autonomy from mainland China.
Indeed, include the rest of China and that figure will be somewhat lower.
UK average is certainly dragged down by the fact that most people have some form of connection no matter how remote. 80Mpbs here.
Mbps
Where’s that edit button!
It isn’t sort of cheating, it is just plain wrong.
China’s official title to Hong Kong is ‘Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.’ But this one has a problem with factual knowledge, this is the same one that thought 4k had twice as many pixels as 1080p.
So my money is on South Korea – I know they were fastest a few years ago… Watch this Leslie Horn: http://bit.ly/UWnpQa
The country with the fastest internet is South Korea.
And why link Bloomberg as the article source when it is reprinting the Akamai reported findings, that is your source via Bloomberg – shoddy at best. ANd it is ‘Akamai’ not ‘Akami’ or ‘Acme’, Leslie babes.
3 gaping mistakes in one minor article stolen from Bloomberg, you’d think that was impossible, surely she is taking the piss.
Try writing about something you actually know shite about, actually don’t, you give me stuff to rant about when I have nothing to rant about – a gift that keeps giving.
wow, this article really did rustle your jimmies
Go back to Reddit Josh. It’s not that BAD Mark… Atleast she gives me the Horn.
I’ve seen worse.
Oh my good! I can’t believe it’s not ‘Merica!!!!!
Merica is also not a country, kingdom of the ‘border people’.

Well that was kind of an anti-climax.
I’m from a non-cable zone with a top speed of 1mbps, South Tyneside, thanks.
