I can’t solve a Rubik’s Cube. All the spinning I do, all the rejiggering I try, all I end up with is a mess of colors with no idea how I got there. It’s okay though! I can now fake it like I know how. Matt Parker has figured out a way to cheat and make it look like you can solve a Rubik’s Cube—even though you have no freaking clue.
The secret is in performing the same sequence with the Rubik’s cube over and over and over and over. When you use the same sequence, the Rubik’s Cube will eventually reset itself and get back to where you start from (even if it looks like a mess during the whole process). Watch the video, Parker’s sequence is simply moving the left column down and the right column up and turning the whole cube around and doing it again. You’ll eventually get there! Pretty good. However, when you do leave it in a room for people to see it unfinished and come back in to find someone playing with it, people are going to be pretty confused when you start wailing and bashing the bastards head in with a club.

Do people still play with rubik’s cubes? The damn thing came out while I was still at school so I remember the original cube mania. Like many kids at the time I bought one of those “how to solve the cube” books and memorised the method, so I was pretty fast at it. It makes me wonder how much I’d remember if I tried it today.

You will only ever be able to solve it if you were the one who.. err.. unsolved… it. And even then it will probably take forever. Very interesting approach though; I can solve the cube in 3 minutes and never even thought of doing this.
Sign of the times that some elaborate cheat is the article about the rubric cube rather than the simple set of transformations to fix it. Shame on you world, in my day we figured it out ourselves and wouldn’t dream of the charade suggested here. Zero points.
