Despite releasing a handful of stellar handsets, the end of last year brought bad news for HTC. The company’s posted a profit of just £21.5 million for the final quarter of 2012 — its lowest ever since 2004.
For some perspective, that’s a £62 million drop compared to the third quarter of 2012 and a staggering £200 million fall compared to the fourth quarter of 2011. Those are frankly terrifying numbers for the Taiwanese manufacturer.
Somehow, CEO Peter Chou remains positive, claiming that “the worst for HTC has probably passed”. He could be right: HTC’s slew of high-spec (and well-received) new phones launched well into the fourth quarter of 2012, so their impact may be felt in 2013 instead. For HTC’s sake, let’s hope so. This is not really a shock though, there are a lot of HTC devices and as such need support etc.. in a market that is flooded with Apple, Google and Samsung, there others dont have nearly as many devices and yet i bet still have the same level of market share.. but i agree, they could come back as the Apple starts to rot now..
True, it’s a great shame because HTC did better than Samsung at one point, thanks to the built quality and Sence UI but hardwork beats talent everytime, when talent doesnt work hard. Meaning, HTC did not look after updates, my ICS update and failed attempts of getting CM10 on Desire S was a horror story.
HTC FT…. oh wait
sort out the damn battery life and provide updates!!!!
Nexus FTW yey!
I don’t know how they managed to take an brilliant brand like the Desire and flush it down the toilet with the Desire S and Desire HD. Then they decided to sell out and release about 45 other sub standard disappointing models per week. I’m not surprised that they are suffering. I had the HTC Sensation which was their flagship at the time … for about a month before they released the HTC Sensation XL, annoying!
I’ve now made the move away from HTC as I’m sure many have and will be doing, I’m not annoyed … I’m just disappointed in you HTC
Me too, Nexus is the way to go I reckon.
I got a Nexus4
As other’s have said, I’m not surprised given the fact that they seem to release new handsets every two minutes and drop support for their old ones as soon as they can.
I had a Hero, which was a great phone at the time, but it took them months to follow through on their promise of an update to Eclair. Not long after the update finally arrived I installed VillainROM and got Froyo (I think, it’s been a while now!) which ran far quicker than the official version with Sense.
Then I had a choice of Galaxy SII or Sensation, and I chose the Sensation. Again, slow updates. And now it seems they won’t be releasing a Jelly Bean update. So I took the plunge and installed a custom ROM, which now puts the Sense-laden ICS version to shame.
To cut a long story short, my next phone will be Nexus (if I can get my hands on one!)
