At least someone’s got a sense of humour over the whole Jessops-going-into-administration thing, even if they are totally on the money with this one. Too soon? Not according to the now-jobless staffers. [Twitter]

Apple Admits Battery Problems: It's iOS 5's Fault
Weathering the Jessops Administration
Shouldn’t they be blaming higher managements decision rather than the customers? I wonder how many staff members shopped with Amazon too?
Yep. And their head of business development left 10 months ago to take over HMV. Looks like that worked out well for him.
I have no idea what jessops even sold.
I’m guessing Jessy J CD’s and Black Ops 2 memorabilia
It was Jessie J’s terrible SAS movie
Or it exclusivley sold here sex changes Operation on blueray
Someone’s a little bit bitter…
A bit sour more like!
I dont get why the UK are so hung up about this, its sad Jessops have gone but they can only blame themselves!
yeah seems silly, i mean they’ve only lost their jobs…
I would have phrased it “The staff at Jessops would like to thank Amazon. Dodging tax, 1% at a time”. Blaming the customers for saving money is pointless; Amazon were the ones that undercut them, the customers were doing what customers do – go for the best value for money for themselves. Capitalism at it’s inglorious best!
Capitalism.
It’s just awful is it not ?
What system would you have us adopt?
I think you missed a tinge of sarcasm there.
You never know!
I’m hoping there was a tinge of sarcasm anyway!
Well, I’m glad Jesspots have gone out of business.
I bought several items from them over the years and never received a Christmas card or an invite to the VP’s wedding.
I’ll ignore the sarcasm and point out that Amazon benefits from tax evasion. That’s got nothing to do with capitalism (tax is a feature of all economic systems, as is avoiding and evading it). Though of course Amazon *also* benefits from a good capitalist model.
Look, the whole thing is dog-eat-dog.
Like it or not.
I don’t get weepy about businesses failing, they’re just businesses.
They want my money.
I want the best goods at the lowest price possible.
period.
Everything else is just frippery.
They should thank the management for setting extortionate prices compared to everywhere else!
“even if they are totally on the money with this one” – Well Jessops have been loss making for years so won’t have been paying tax. So they aren’t on the money at all.
Yes, because Jessops employees don’t shop at Amazon do they?
not sure its fair to say that its all Jessop’s fault.
how can a tax paying company with shops compete with a warhousing company that pays no tax (or very little abroad)
if we arent careful we will see all our high street places close and then amazon will increase the prices to what they think they can get.
all that is happening is that the country is losing money abroad
there are other things you can have in a town centre / high street to make an interesting and social place to be. a jessops store, by the virtue of natural selection, is clearly not one of them. i don’t know what this infatuation with saving the ‘UK high street’ is. to me it is just a parade of shit shops which i never go into.
have you been to brighton? there are lots of great small independent businesses which thrive in the lanes areas. i am sure there are plenty of other examples. maybe with jessops/hmv going other independent businesses previously overwhelmed by them will be able to thrive again. independents with niche product ranges, expert advice, and excellent customer service can still work. for everything else there’s amazon.
p.s. when i say high street i am largly talking about chain shops. it is chain shops that i am not mourning the departure of (i do like a few for sure). historically it was chain shops that were first blamed for a departure from more traditional shopping.
ah, Brighton. im sure there are loads of shops selling dildos and false teeth
the problem is that shops cannot compete with amazon. so in the end most will close. especially as the populous becomes more internet aware.
old people like my parents still use shops. and the young people who cant shop online. the rest of us shop online. although i avoid amazon now in favour of smaller UK based companies where i can.
To be fair, Jessops hasn’t paid much corporation tax since 2007. But that is because they have not made a profit…
Certainly I have sympathy for members of staff at the likes of HMV, Jessops and Comet that they’ve lost their jobs. But when they start to blame me for not keeping their business afloat despite extortionate prices compared to online (not just Amazon), and a lack of the sort of shopping experience that might actually make me want to pay 5-10% more…bah =/
Sour grapes, Jessops.
Grow up and come up with a better business plan!
I think shops are discovering that simply selling expensive items doesn’t work as a business model any more. The internet shopping experience satisfies a lot of those needs. Over the next few years hopefully we’ll see a new unique experience when shopping in towns/cities which can compete with what the internet has to offer by giving us something new and unique.
it cannot ever happen though, can it?
massive rent from greedy councils. more staff who need some knowledge, rather than min. wage box packers. paying corp tax etc.
Well it won’t happen over night, but it’s either that or town centres become totally based around restaurants, clubs, bars, theatres and other places that can’t really be replaced by the internet.
FYI, in my home town, the main shopping precinct (which is an absolute s**thole) is owned privately and the private landlord charges so much rent that half the shops are empty… Never understood the business sense with that one. I have my suspicious that he wants to kick all the shops out and build *more* houses.
I think the improved shops thing can happen if we start having more of the individual style shops which have more character.
Thanks Jessops for your high prices, rude and unhelpful staff (in my local branch at least) and generally poor range of cameras in store.. .
Can’t say I’ll miss them, for lenses, dSLRs, etc I always found Warehouse Express were the best! Amazon is fine for compact cameras.
I remember my Dad telling me like 30 years ago that he wouldnt shop at Jessops as they were too expensive. They just didnt adapt to the competition. You cant blame Amazon for that.
But Amazon.co.uk is a pretty terrible shopping experience! They’re always late with new stock, their search function is ridiculous. The only thing they’re good at selling are books and music.
It’s an easy cop-out, but with proper management all those shops could have withstood the crisis and competition from Amazon.
As someone once told me ‘The Wheel Turns’. Whilst there are certainly economic factors at play here, maybe a bigger force is at play, change.
Independent shops forced out by high street chains, high street chains forced out by online retailers. The markets changing, change with it die as Jessops, HMV, Currys and Blockbuster has proved.
The only sad part is that where the money goes and who it benefits gets further and further from the source, you!
That was the key benefit of local traders was they employed locally, money got spent locally, no more. I’m not mourning this, it would be fruitless, local is not the model anymore, range, price and convenience is, no matter where it comes from.
I do predict one problem for the future though that is beginning to manifest itself now. The further from the source an industry gets, the less it can be controlled and legislated upon.
Just think of all the dodgey Chinese devices you can buy online. Who knows how they are made, by who and that fake ‘CE’ mark on them isn’t going to catch fire and burn your house down.
Mind you it was cheap and I only used 2 calories buying it, win win.
I’m hoping a pound shop opens at every one of their locations – at least then i won’t be ripped off silly when wanting to buy any miscellaneous cable that i might require! Same goes for you Comet…
