Nokia had higher than expected Lumia sales for its fourth quarter thanks to the release of the Lumia 900 last spring and 920 in September. The company sold 4.4 million handsets, up from 2.9 million in Q3.
For perspective, though, Apple sold about 27 million iPhones in the third quarter of 2012, and Nokia is also warning that the first quarter of 2013 doesn’t look so hot.
Still, the positive sales trend gives some hope that Nokia has a shot at survival. Well, it’s a start. [Nokia]

Nokia Lumia 920 Versus a Car
I’ve tried to get hold of one, but the 920 is only available to EE. I think once the deal with EE runs out and they are available everywhere they will sell quite well.
Same. I really want one, but refuse to buy one from EE, and I’m not looking to pay £540 for an unlocked one. Hopefully once they start showing up on other carriers, they’ll be easier to find, and cheaper.
It’s available on Orange and T-mobile at about £5 cheaper a month than EE.
Orange and T-Mobile are EE now which means that you’ll still need to tolerate some aspect of their questionable prices and ailing data speeds. Since the merger of the networks, my “T-Mobile” connection has been considerably worse, which is a pity.
Not bad, if the UI was more like Android or Apple, I would had got myself one, for some reason thole live tiles makes a feel bit claustrophobic since I’m an Android user.
The whole point is that the UI is different to the others and that’s one of the reasons I love it. If you take the time to customise the tile layout and sizes it can be quite the opposite and far more intuitive than the competition.
well think if you’re an Apple user then, at least we’ve had some exposure with widgets, they’ve only got icons!
The tile interface is the whole reason I’m toying with the idea of WP8 – it may occasionally feel claustrophobic but the consistency and smoothness of the interface supplies enough “surprise & delight” to keep me happy.
Coming from Android, I really like my lumia 820. New refreshing way of seeeing the same information.
The “lack” of apps hasn’t been an issue either
820 is a great phone, my wife has one and prefers it over her previous androids. We both prefer the various twitter (and many others) apps on WP too, far more slick and stylish.
I think ICS and above has an absolute taste for style and groovy, pitch black and tron blue
The pure OS does, sadly most of the apps don’t. I Like pure android on my N7 but too many apps just look crappy on it.
This. Android app pattern guidelines have been sloppy for far too long. This is something that Apple and Microsoft got right from the start.
Haha. Were you just born yesterday?
I’ve been finding that Android works well on my Nexus 7 though I’m not too sure how the experience would translate to a smaller device and the Metro / Modern UI certainly has its charms on a smaller device. One thing you probably wouldn’t be too keen on is the multitasking implementation in Windows Phone 8 compared with Android 4.X.
Very true, multitasking is a right mess for both Windows Phones and iDevices.
Yeah, a total pain compared with Android. Thankfully, the number of tasks that most users employ a phone for (texting, checking Facebook and the internet) are addressed well in Windows Phone 8 given how speedy and zippy the system is.
One thing that is a huge boon to WP and always makes me hesitate when I am considering grabbing an Android phone is the People hub which is a huge boon towards the usability and how enjoyable it is to use Windows Phone.
I’ve to check People hub out, never tried a Windows phone before but worth a try I guess.
Bloody great phone, not had a spot of bother with mine and the weight is a total non-issue. The EE deal was a massive mistake and someone within Nokia UK should really be made redundant for it.
I believe exclusivity ends this month so hopefully we’ll see them cheaper soon too.
Woo-hoo, with sales numbers like this Windows Phone may soon soon be overtaking Bada in worldwide market share.
Steady now – that seems like crazy talk! Next you’ll be making wild predictions of double digit market share.
I predict sometime in the next ten years Windows Phone will have double digit market share.
according to ms it has 5% worldwide marketshare now.
As much as that? That’s not bad going for industry giants like MS and Nokia. Although, that IS according to MS.
Loved my Lumia 710, then a unscrupulous character stole it from my pocket on the tube. I’m now back to my Nexus One with a smashed screen (bought in this condition for £20)
Being a robot over fruit user i enjoyed the space and custom options etc.. and have always thought of the iphone as boring tbh, looks nice, built well and works great but the os is dull.. but this Nokia looks great fun and i think i like the live tile thing, when it comes round to change handsets i will be looking at the Nokia`s more.. no doubt the “iphone 7s mini” will the hipster statement of choice by then but then i was never a fan of skinny jeans..
The number of Nokia Lumia’s I noticed at Times Square, NY and the number of Lumias that photobombed my holiday photos, are a testament to this.
My 920 is best phone i ever owned, gone through several iphones and androids.
People moaned about the weight, but personally i love the fact i can tell im holding it and that its in my pocket etc, id much rather it be heavy than light.
Performance wise i only had 1 issue, and that was words with friends that crashed my phone and has since been patched.
Just a shame i couldnt get it in red or blue
Exactly the same here. I’ve done the rounds, and the 920 is hands down the best phone I’ve used to date. It makes using the phone “fun” again.
To put things into perspective, the much lauded and Giz UK member applauded (to the point of it being nauseating) LG Nexus 4 sold….400,000 units in Q3. LG are now ramping up production for third party suppliers/networks where it will be sold at a higher price. At a time when next gen phones have begun to emerge on various tech blogs, I don’t think we’ll be hearing too much more from the N4 corner in 2013.
It was launched 15th November, so i’m not sure where you got those dates and numbers from. It was out of stock for most of the two months its been on sale.

Part of the reason for the “low” number of devices sold is that it has been out of stock due to production production numbers. While that isn’t indicative of the quality of the device, it is a fair complaint to make.
I concede WP8 was launched on Oct 29, but Nokia have just stated they’ve been having supply problems too. So it was close enough to be a like for like comparison.
YES! Of course people are buying them….
duh
Just don’t see the point of Windows phone, only reason I was excited was because of Windows being open but they made a closed OS instead so it sucks.
The UI and general user experience (aside from multitasking) is very good. Is a (debatably) superior UI a good enough point?
You live in a very black and white world don’t you?
Also, unlike Apple, Nokia does actually sell more than one line of phones so comparing 4.4mil to 27mil isn’t really a fair comparison.
Hey come on now buddy…you’ve got black and white versions…with different storage and the 4S too…heck Apple sell a whole range of phones!
Potentially also low-prices Lumia 800s being sold? I know they’ve been popular lately (I got one myself and I love it).
