If the screams from pedestrians and the angry looks from oncoming drivers don’t provide enough clues that you’ve accidentally turned onto a one-way street, maybe it’s time you bought a Mercedes. Wait, what? The company’s upcoming vehicles will include an updated safety system that’s able to autonomously recognise no-entry signs and warn the driver of a wrong turn.
Using a windshield mounted camera that the system already relies on to keep track of speed limits, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and E-Class will automatically recognise no-entry warning signs. Most of the time they’re ignored, but if the driver attempts to pass the sign and pull onto a one-way street, an audible alarm will sound and a visual warning will appear on the dashboard. For improved accuracy, the safety system also compares the camera data with the vehicle’s satnav street database, particularly when visibility’s reduced during a storm and there’s a greater risk of false positives. Can this be made compulsory on all cars IMMEDIATELY. I live in a cul de sac which idiots mistake for a through road frequently (despite the signs). since the only place they can turn around is right outside my front door and I sleep in the front, this is more than a tad annoying.
Yes, and to top it off they should have an option to install Ingress on it too.
Fords new system is built off android I think, that would make it possible.
That’s it! I’m getting a Ford and not Hyundai any more.
exactly the same problem. only big lorries
I tend to get dickheads with heavy bass soundsystems, an artic would probably be quieter.
According to Ford, they already have this in their new cars (at an additional cost).
Personally, I think things like this make it easier to be a poor driver. and a warning sound after the person has made a mistake when they’re not paying attention may make them panic and make another mistake.
Best solution is to avoid this innovation and pay attention to the road!
If it only recognises no-entry signs it wouldn’t work on the street I live on – there’s seven side-roads joining it, all have right/left-turn-only signs and the only no-entry is at the end and it’s difficult to accidentally turn down that way anyway.
Also I do also feel that these technologies, though created with good intentions, do encourage people to not concentrate on the road.
How lazy do car manafacters want us drivers to get? Alerts to warn us of one-way roads, satellite cruise control to slow the car and stop (incase what? your not looking at the road ahead?!)… im all for a few little smart additions to new cars but not ‘safety’ features that practically say ‘dont pay attention mate, ive got this!’ what next? a headrest that turns into a pillow after 6pm?!
