Gizmodo es Español reports on some surprising words by Nokia big chief Stephen Elop. Asked about a potential Android phone in Nokia’s near future, Elop said that “anything is possible”:
El País: Do you discard launching an Android phone next year?
Elop: In the current ecosystem wars we are using Windows Phone as our weapon. But we are always thinking about what’s coming next, what will be the role of HTML 5, Android… HTML5 could make the platform itself—being Android, Windows Phone or any other—irrelevant in the future, but it’s still too soon [to tell]. Today we are committed and satisfied with Microsoft, but anything is possible.
It’s only logical to assume that Nokia is keeping other options on the table. After all, their contract with Microsoft is non-exclusive. But it’s surprising that Elop is admitting that “anything is possible” so soon after the launch of Windows Phone 8, even though he says that they are totally committed to Windows Phone right now.
Asked about Nokia’s critical situation, Elop argues that the tide is turning, with Lumia 920 being a big success. In fact, he actually sees Nokia getting double-digit marketshare and then fighting with Google and Apple at the same level:
I can’t give figures, but the first objective, without giving any dates, is getting a double-digit marketshare. Then, keep pushing and establish an equilibrium with the other two big ecosystems, Apple and Android.
Quite the optimist, this Finnish dude. Must be all that aquavit and pickled herring. [El País via Gizmodo en Español]

Do You Think the Nokia Boss Hinted at Them Moving to Other Platforms In the Future?
Problem Nokia have is how they’ve tied their flagship device the 920 to one network, made the phone so expensive and made it so bulky. I mean it isn’t the screen size that makes it so big, like it has half an inch of plastic as a boarder to the screen and it is like an inch thick lol. Not only that but they tied to to Windows Phone 8, an OS people don’t want to use. Surely put a Quad core in there and make an Android sister phone?
I don’t know why they decided to target such a small market. I was going to buy one at the end of last year, I thought I’d try something new. However the whole EE only thing just stopped me from doing that. Now for the next two years I’ll be rocking a GS4 instead when it comes out.
Why put a quad core in it when it blows away most current quad core phones with its OS optimised dual core chip? Also lots of people want to use the OS hence the growing market share. It would be very boring if we all only chose android or iOS. To me WP8 is superior to both. EE exclusively ends this month and obviously figures are on a global scale, not just the UK.
Now all you need is ANY form of proof to back up your “facts” What growing market are you taking about ? This time last year Microsoft had 3.6% of the market now they have 3%, that is a contracting market, but maybe Microsoft will stop paying you if you admit the truth.
your an idiot, those figures include WM… WP grew 300% sales from last month over last year….
I just don’t get why you’d make it Windows 8 only, update the specs and make an Android version too. More people are willing to buy Android, support both operating systems but it makes no sense to target one with no market share and the one with the largest, not at all.
It doesn’t matter if EE exclusive ends this month, they’ve missed the Window now. The 920 specs weren’t impressive when it launched, all it had was the camera which daylight shots weren’t that great anyways. The GS4 is like 3 months away now…. just going to wait for this years big leap in hardware.
Touchwiz is great too, Samsung does some amazing stuff with it that no one else is doing like Windows and PiP.
Touchwiz is utter shite, its everything that’s wrong with android. Would only ever buy a pure device like the N4.
ive used touchwiz almost 2 years now its not shite its not the prettiest but at the very least its functional anyone who has actually used it for a prolonged period can admit that. btw pure ICS and JB have taken some features from touchwiz so i cant be as bad as you make out
“we are using Windows Phone as our weapon” yep, a strategy about as effective as a superhero that has the power to shoot 3 cotton balls from his hands once every 10 days!
it’s great when you need to clean your ears in a hurry
i say all power to him and Nokia, i loved my Lumia 710, and i think if they did make an Android phone, it was just go into the pit of other Android phones, swallowed up by the fragmentation
i don’t think i could even count how many phones there are out there now with Android, Dual Core Processor, 512mb RAM and a 5MP camera!
And all of them selling better than any similar speed windows phone.
Sorry ‘spec’d’
unfortunately it’s true, but personally i enjoyed my windows phone, although it wasn’t nearly as functional as Android, but that’s why i have my Nexus 7
The vast majority of Android phones are dull, fugly and just plain shite in the mid and low end. Windows phones out perform androids that have far higher specs than them because its a better optimised OS.
BLAH BLAH BLAH! Which phone out perform what phones ? My single core HTC desire HD runs Jellybean at a very impressive speed so I’ll call UTTER NONSENSE since ICS Microsoft has been unable to win a speed test with Android and that is the real truth.
You clearly haven’t used one to say that.
Do you have a link that backs this up or is this just anecdotal?
“Quite the optimist, this Finnish dude. Must be all that aquavit and pickled herring.” Elop is Canadian…
Haha yeah I did my best impersonation of this when I read that..
Really don’t see how they could not make an android phone in the future. Two prongs are better than one.
You only have to look at HTC’s latest figures to see what a mistake it would be for Nokia to make android phones. Being the third OS is where they need to continue focusing.
It’s really hurting Samsung isn’t it ? WP7/8 is the 4th OS, Blackberry still beats them to 3rd.
You are clearly clueless to make a comment like that. Samsung have taken android as no one can compete on raw specs, costs and retailer kickbacks.
Based on what evidence?
its simpler than that Samsung are succeeding with android because they have a mind share second only apple they know how to advertise there products. Until other android oems can push their devices well they will continue to fail
He is an idiot that should have been kicked out already, Nokia designed Android phones would fly off the shelves, I would certainly buy one.
I think everyone would. LG and Samsung would crap their pants and HTC wouldn’t feel too happy about it either given their recent attempts at using….wait for it…. ‘colour’.
