Helmet? Check. Segway? Got it. Total dweeb status? Done and done. Under normal circumstances, it’s hard to look at someone riding the personal transportation system without cracking up. But try watching a series of people falling off of Segways, and it’s utterly impossible to keep a straight face.
From what it looks like, the Segway is actually very difficult to master. Some of these operators delude themselves into thinking they look like total badasses. They don’t. [WorldWideInterweb]

I’m glad these things aren’t legal for use in public here in the UK. I don’t care about how stupid other people look riding them, but when they’re inherently unsafe you’d have to be an idiot to ride one.
I’ve ridden these a fair amount. They’re really easy, you just have to trust it. These people are crashing because the speed is set too high and they’re not good enough to use them.
Sure it’s possible to ride them fairly well, but they will always be less safe than a bicycle. They don’t even have brakes, and trying to stop when going fast in a reasonable distance is going to result in the thing overcompensating and throwing the rider off as evidenced in the video. Even going slow all it takes is a misstep and the thing goes out of control, imagine that on a crowded pavement or even worse a road.
They don’t have an ‘accelerator’ either, what’s your point? A car is super dangerous in the hands of idiots, as are bikes. I’d rather be hit by one of these at their standard 12 mph than a mad biker going at 20 mph, or a car at 30 mph.
Ever seen someone ride a bike for the first time in their lives? What about someone driving a car for the first time? Segways are built to be easy and safe. Once you’ve used one for a bit they’re fantastic.

At 20mph, or even 30mph, I can stop a hell of a lot quicker and safer than someone going 12mph on a Segway. As I said they are inherently unsafe in their design, they have the same riding mechanics as a unicycle yet take the human’s control away and give it to a computer to interpret what the person is trying to do.
They are NOT meant to be used as tricks – unfortunately these people don’t know it – the weight change that a jump or sudden movement from high speed or quick distance change can fire the gyros -admittedly about 10% of these tricks are segway problems, but a lot are cock ups.
@theran24 Anything used by an idiot can be dangerous, doesnt matter if its a segway or a lorry!
Agreed!
They’re about as ‘dangerous’ as roller blades.
I’d say a little more dangerous, at least a skilled blader can slow down pretty damn quickly where as no amount of skill will get past the Segway’s technical limitations.
Legs, FTW!
Quick, someone submit this to You’ve Been Framed share the profits!
Amazing! Put a mssive smile on my face!!
