According to The Next Web, the next generation of Apple’s Mac lineup won’t look much different — understandable, given the 2012 overhaul — but the guts will be shiny and new. Including, importantly, a new Broadcom chipset that boosts Mac Wi-Fi to the 802.11ac standard.

Apple won’t be the first laptop manufacturer to roll the speedy — 1.3Gbps throughput with three antennas — 802.11ac Wi-Fi; Asus rolled it into a gaming notebook last summer. But as TNW points out, it would be the first company to introduce what’s known as 5G Wi-Fi on a broad scale. It would also give Apple a crucial talking point in the wake of last year’s retina successes.
As for timing, well, who’s to say? While MacBooks are due for a spec bump in the coming months, apparently Broadcom hasn’t finished work on the magic chipset yet. Let’s hope it puts a bow on it soon; fast can’t get here fast enough. [TNW]

Airplane Wi-Fi Is About to Suck Less
Ok, seriously, who has EVER called it “5G Wi-fi”? Or indeed, who’s referred to Wireless-N as “4G”? I have never, ever seen anyone call it that.
It’s probably one of those horrendously new phrases that’ll end up sticking because the branding of 4G cellular networks has gone too well. Kind of like how nearly everything with a higher resolution than the last version has HD added to the name.
norm if i just seee 5g wifi its just 2.4ghz and 5ghz ready
to get them fast speeds any way you need to be running 3-5 data streams to max it out 802.11ac spec
still most laptops are lucky if they come with higher then 75mb wireless N at the moment

It’s not the first, it’s not unique, and it’s not even all that great. I think they’re focussing on improving in the wrong areas like always.
First Apple gave us displays that improved things from pixels we couldn’t see, to pixels we could see even less. Now it’s improving wifi from faster-than-our-internet-connection-and-router to even-faster-than-our-internet-connection-and-router.
