There have been rumours floating around the internet for months suggesting Google has been considering building its own LTE network. Now, the Wall Street Journal claims that the search giant is secretly building its own new kind of wireless data network.
The Journal report is centred on an FCC filing spotted by engineer Steven Crowley. Seems Google is set to test a new system around its Mountain View campus, which will use 50 base stations and 200 “user devices”. Google lawyers attempted to redact part of the filing, claiming that:
“The information for which confidential treatment is sought concerns the highly competitive consumer electronics market.”
Which sounds exciting, but who knows where to begin speculating on a statement like that. Weirdly, the network will only provide coverage for devices built to access frequencies in the range 2524 to 2625 megahertz.
Of course, Google does all kinds of crazy shit at its Mountain View campus in the US, so it’s unclear whether this project will ever amount to anything. But given the Big G’s track record of delivering amazing results, if this is a real thing, it could be worth getting excited about. [Wall Street Journal via Verge]

Unsurprisingly I would sign up to a Google Network in a picosecond (assuming I could get through the Google play ordering system to do so). Likewise Google Fibre, which I hear they are expanding.
Not expanding this far just yet though
A man can dream.
and wait…
I can’t wait.
do as Buddha says, “do not want, accept what is”….
It will turn out the Users are the Devices! Google can send data wirelessly straight into our brains!
sounds good to me, don’t worry about Google glass, just beam that search info directly to my visual cortex.
Drone, the new product from Google.
You mean ‘Drone™ Beta’
Resistance is futile

I was reading my comment back and thought that I may get a call or letter from Microsoft stating how “Users are the Devices” is similar to “You are the Controller”.

They’ve already thought of that!
Is it possible that Google are just rolling out wirelessly recharged portable microwave coffee warmers?
well they already have the device that draws an Android in your coffee foam, so what else do they need.
50 base stations recharging 4 warmers each, take it to your desk or to a meeting and if your coffee gets cold, just put it in, zap it and presto!
Nonsence, the warmer is built into the base of the cup and the whole campus is covered by the charging field, which keeps your coffee warm wherever you are.
As long as you can guarantee that all of the microwave energy is directed into the coffee, then that would work!
It’s just like the beamed wireless charging systems, except the reciever is controlled by a bunch of electronics that measures the temp of the coffee and controls a heating element as appropriate. A capacitor/battery holds a certain about of charge to deal with any blackspots.
That is very likely. I also have no doubt Apple will already be working on it and patents and complaints are to be filed.
They were probably filed months ago and will see the light of day in 2023.
Testing out the new wireless data network on Ingress players sounds good too
