Sensing a trend here? Because I am. Yet another activity tracker has emerged from the bowels of CES Unveiled.
Fitbug, a UK-based wellness company, is showing off their second generation activity tracker in the form of a tiny pebbled called the Orb. It tracks steps, calories burned, distance traveled and pace. But instead of transmitting data via Wi-Fi, they’ve opted for Bluetooth that syncs your data in one of three ways. First, it actively streams your activity stats when working out in real time to the mobile app for you to see. Second, data can be sent at specific intervals set by the user. Third, users can push stats at will whenever they feel like it.
The Orb also tracks sleep and can be worn on the wrist, in the pocket or clipped on to whatever you feel like clipping it onto. Rather than a rechargeable battery, Fitbug has opted for watch batteries. Look for the Orb (£30) along with a heart rate monitor and Bluetooth-enabled scale (£50) this Spring.

There’s a heck of a lot of narcissism in a lot of these personal monitoring products kicking around at present. I know how much exercise I do each day – not enough. If I was exercising and walking regularly then I would also be aware of that. I kinda need my electronic devices to tell me stuff that my senses – including the ‘common’ one – can’t tell me. Still if you’re a pro-athlete or have some medical condition that needs monitoring I imagine this device and the many others may well be of use.
I find it very useful for tracking my runs etc.
Fair point although I’m sure you’ve already got a device that does this for you perfectly well already. I guess as a non-runner I can’t really appreciate it.
Kind of a non-convenient one – I just use the accelerometer on my S3 – but it’s quite a lot of weight to carry on my arm, and it doesn’t track my heart rate, or track my sleeping patterns, so one of these would be perfect, and existing models are either too expensive, or iOS only. Hope this one is cheaper, then I might invest.
Well Eddy, in a rare admission for the internet, I admit I stand corrected. Perhaps one of these might encourage my flabby arse into a more energetic lifestyle
I recommend it, strongly. Just having something to compare, day by day, and strive to do better, adds so much motivation. Went from 5 minutes per kilometre to sub-20 minutes for 5k (Not that fast, but I was just running with music).
This always happens, I bought a fitbit one on Friday so OF COURSE a whole host of better and cheaper trackers are going to come out the following week.
