FIFA has announced that—finally!—goal line technology will be used to assess whether balls really do cross the line at the 2014 football World Cup, which will be held in Brazil.
Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA, explained that goal line technology was successfully tested in the Club World Cup in December, so it’s been given the green light for use in the 2014 World Cup.
Two systems—Goalref and Hawkeye—were used at the Club World Cup, reports the BBC, but it remains to be seen which one will be chosen for the competition in 2014. While they both provide concrete evidence as to whether the ball ever crossed the line to score an official goal, they’re completely different systems: Goalref uses magnetic sensors to determine where the ball is, while Hawkeye uses cameras.
But FIFA is opening the contract up to any company which chooses to tender, so there will likely be some stiff competition. Now all we need is for every other sport to embrace these kinds of systems, too. [BBC]

5′m glad you dropped the word Soccer from the US title, to include it would have been unforgivable!
I agree. There is no such thing as soccer.
Meh, still a pathetic band-aid to a broken, once great sport. Why not just have a ‘fourth official’ aka video replays like Rugby has done for years now!? Put an end to those arrogant divers arguing with the referee.
I’d make any arguing with the referee a red card offence, aside from a replay request like tennis or rugby. They certainly aren’t right all the time, but theirs should be the last word during the game. Leave the arguing until after.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the sport itself! Hell of a lot wrong with the management at FIFA and FA level though.
I absolutely agree. Tried to say that the game itself is great, but the management, players and maybe even SOME (not all) of the fans it attracts have ruined it.
Divers should be treated the same way as a ‘diving’ horse at the Grand National. That’d soon put a stop to it.
Not sure I would like a Premiership Burger
