Another high-profile form of processed meat has been pulled into the horsemeat shame, with Czech authorities claiming to have found traces of horse in pork and beef meatballs destined to feed depressed husbands trapped in the hellish Ikea ecosystem.
The find apparently saw the Czech State Veterinary Administration discover an unspecified amount of horse in a batch of meatballs made in Sweden, with some 760kg of minced meat pulled from Ikea’s distribution network before it could reach the furniture chain’s local eateries as a result.
Ikea says the meatballs were assembled by a single Swedish supplier, but hasn’t elaborated on whether or not these dodgy balls have been distributed to countries other than the Czech Republic. [Trust.org]

“Now even leaner!”
I thought i’d successfully avoided all Shergar-related products. Seems I fell at the last hurdle.
But seriously, I like these things, now i’m sad
It’s just horse. It won’t kill you
Doesn’t stop me being skittish.
But isn’t the real issue behind all this scandal is the fact some of the horse meat found in the food chain is not fit for human consumption, I.e. carcinogenic… So I do believe consumers have a cause for concern.
I seriously doubt it’s any worse than what normally goes in these things.
I can tell you that this is utter bullshit. I can’t tell you how or why I know – legal stuff and that you know. All you need to know is that I wear a lab coat and I work with highly specialised machinery.
How do you know the ones you’ve eaten before had horse in? You liked them – no need to stop eating them. There isn’t really a safety issue here. It’s meat. Not that different from cow, sheep, goat or pig.
Besides – you may even be able to run a bit faster
How do you know what you’ve eaten before wasn’t dog, rat or even human?
Because Human tastes sooooooooo good.
If you’ve ever eaten any ground meat you haven’t grounded (grinded? ground?) yourself, you’ve eaten horse.
Emmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Seriously do people really care? I understand if you like horses but the horses weren’t bred for food, they were old knackered horses and nobody moans if they end up as cat or dog food (filler) so why such a problem if a bit is in with economy foodstuffs?
Obviously if you went to your butchers and asked for a nice beef ribeye and got a bit of some old donkey then you’ve been had but who was surprised that value lasagne or burgers had any really meat at all, I know I was!;-)
The Horsemeat Scandal bores me now. I was a slight shock when it all came out. I then realised that I honestly don’t care about it. Sure I actually ate some food with horsemeat and sure it is the there when it shouldn’t be and we never got told but I enjoyed the food regardless and food is food to me.
I wish it would just be dropped by the media as I feel it is being dragged out. Sure, keep on investigating but let us know when the situation has been resolved, not when someone else gets pulled up on it.
Agreed. Seems like its all the news is talking about, and they’ve just beat the horse to death.
One of the fears of eating horse is that certain antibiotics had been used on the animals in question. The source of the meat is more likely farm horses that would have been used to pull carts in Romania rather than racehorse meat. I would reckon that less or no antibiotics were used with these horses.
Another source of cheap meat is donkey, still falling in the bracket of equine, but although less likely, zebra.
Personally I’m waiting for Quorn to bring out Swedish meatballs with horse flavour along with their horsebeef flavour burgers.
Since you’ve mentioned it I’m not bothered by Horse but what would upset me would be if my beefburgers turned out to be mostly Quorn
You won’t need to wait long, they just need to repackage the beef flavour stuff.
So that’s why they taste so good.
yep bored of the whole horse thing now, we all know its been going on now, i dont care which company this week has been found to be using it, just put it on the label or shut up and sort it out. either way i dont care, as a meat eater who loves haggis and black pudding, sausages etc im aware that i consume brains, hearts, anuses, connective tissues and other lovelies so i really dont give a crap about a bit of Eeyore im my food
I know there’s a weird taboo about horse-meat, but its not bad at all.
I wish we could back to the old days where you just didn’t know what was in your food. Only yesterday, Old Terry the Wino gave me a tortilla wrap inside some foil, after I had eaten it, he told me that the cat that it came from was a snowy bengal named Milo who was best friends with Hemmingway the cuddly Norwegian Forest Cat that hangs around the bus stop. He also said that the other half of the wrap had been fed to Hemmingway.
I was like: “Too much information, man.”
I prefer not to know.
