“If we can send a man to the moon, we must be able to tackle porn on the internet.” Those are the now immortal words of Halla Gunnarsdóttir, the political advisor to Iceland’s Interior Minister Ögmundur Jónasson. Iceland wants to block all internet porn.
The Icelandic government believes that, since porn can damage children through computers, game consoles and smartphones, they should just ban it completely from the country’s internet tubes. Apparently, making parents responsible for their children education and the materials they are exposed to is not an option and, instead, they want to prohibit every Icelandic citizen to access porn.
Some of their ideas so far:
- block porn IP addresses and
- making it illegal to use Icelandic credit cards to access x-rated sites.
It appears that children in Iceland have credit cards, which may explain their recent economical system collapse.
The move follows a ban on strip clubs, claiming that these violated women rights and were “harmful to society.” They claim that both strip clubs and pornography are clearly linked to violent sexual crimes in their country. Halla argues that this move is “not anti-sex,” however:
It is anti-violence because young children are seeing porn and acting it out. That is where we draw the line. This material is blurring the boundaries for young people about what is right and wrong.
She believes that parents cannot be held responsible for protecting “our young people. They cannot be with their children all the time and the porn industry actively tries to seek children out.” In other words, there’s a global porn conspiracy to corrupt children worldwide.
It’s ironic that the porn industry started in Scandinavian countries during their sexual revolution in the 60s. While the rest of the world would be in shock at the sight of a nipple, Swedish and Danish porn companies were producing films and magazines, which were viewed by young adults and adults in their home countries and other countries in Europe.
Now, by banning access to internet porn, Iceland will join countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and other temples of democracy widely known to protect women and children’s rights. [Daily Mail via Telegraph]

Funny how it’s not a bloke suggesting these laws
I don’t feel censoring the Internet in any way is morally right, so I generally disagree with these suggested laws, but I agree kids should be more protected somehow. I just think this is the wrong way of going about it.
Also, even if the first proposed idea is actioned, and all porn is blocked at the source, it seems very extreme to prosecute the people who are tech-savvy enough to then locate and buy porn on the Net somehow; That’s basically dictating what people can and can’t do on a very personal level, in my view.
The problem with the Net is that content, which is in no way linked to sexual content, can then suddenly link to sexual content, be it a popup ad or whatever. I just think parents should be advised on how to lock down their PC and web browsers, and only allow their kids to login using an account with very restricted access.
Seconded. I can’t believe that governments in countries across the globe are this blind and ignorant…
It confuses me completely.
“iamthespanishman”
The people higher up in power know what they are doing. It is not them who are blind and ignorant in regards to appropriately handling the predicament of pornographic exposure to children. They know how to aptly handle that issue if necessary, though will not because this is not really about banning pornography. It is about us being conditioned to allow them to slowly make more restrictions on internet freedom and usage as it is “for our own good”. Soon it may even begin to turn into internet “privileges” instead of rights. It is a game of social engineering where we are supposed to slowly but willingly give our rights and power away so that they can presume the role of “big daddy” and we will be obedient children.
I didn’t even think about it that way… Cheers mate
I’m boycotting Iceland.
It may not have much of an impact because I wasn’t planning to go anyway but I’m told its the thought that counts.
It is definitely worth a visit.. If you can go a week or two without porn that is!
Oh and the usual ‘WONT SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!?’
Oh I never think of the children. Don’t want to run the risk of creating a Pavlovian association.
Erm, Hang on, what are you talking about?
+1. I have no idea, am slightly disturbed and strangly hungry for some Pavlova..
Have you ever been on holiday to Iceland?
No, thats the other reason it might not have much of an impact.
Try it, and if you decide to do so go as north as you possibly can. I won’t lie, you can sometimes tell how taboo they see alot of things. But put it this way, they have much more beautiful things to concentrate on.
That, and their internet is SHIT.
why would a frozen food store want to ban internet porn ???
badummchhhhh
Thing is though when I was 14 I was calling up girls for like 7 hours a night and doing the whole phone sex thing. Then you get to know each other more and just have sex in real life lol. Porn would have stopped that and made for a lot less angry people like my parents on the phone bill or their parents for me shagging their daughter at 14 lol.
I miss those days though just as the net was kicking off and all on 28.8k modems. Every one from school was just getting into it and joining chat rooms, you’d end up just chatting to school mates all the time on it. Then you’d meet new people on chat rooms and go meet them in London or whatever.
It’s weird as you get older though because your all go to work and the whole social thing of school goes. Suddenly you have a lot less friends and life is a lot less fun lol. Every one is having kids now and having lives where it’s just them and their partner. I don’t get why everyone goes so closed off and boring.
I’m like the only one without a G/F or who isn’t married or doesn’t have kids. Like when I was young I thought we’d all be out partying every night and instead everyone is at home being a cunt.
Join the furry fandom, we never grow up, we meet up to socialise and have parties, you’ve just got to put up with the social stigma of being different XD
It’s called growing up
People have responsibilities n shit. It’s not necessarily being a boring cunt – saving money, reproducing and then providing support for your offspring is the logical next step between playing games with/trying to fuck your friends (14-28 say), and dying (70-90).
Someone should remind Mr. Ögmundur Jónasson that Iceland has never been to the moon..
iceland is not in scandinavia. irony busted.
Well, unlike the moon, porn can be encrypted. So good luck with that.
Also: The children? Bitch please. Kids have been finding nudie mags under beds and in closets for generations. Porn isn’t something to shield and protect your kids from, volcanoes are. Guns are. Religious zealouts are. People who try to force their version of morality upon the genral public are.
