There have been a few Firefox OS developer phones floating around but now, Mozilla has announced the first official Firefox OS handset at Mobile World Congress: The ZTE Open.
It’s not a high-powered guy, packing a Cortex A5 processor, and a 3.5-inch display. It’s like a glance into Android’s past. Information beyond that is a bit lacking at the moment, but more is sure to come out during Mozilla’s live press conference and as MWC powers on. And hey, it’s a start.
The ZTE Open isn’t alone though. Alcatel also has a phone coming out for the new OS, the One Touch Fire. Like the Open, the One Touch Fire is a pretty basic phone with 3.5-inch screen, a 1GHz processor, 512MB storage (plus a 2GB SD card) and a 3.2-megapixel camera. It’s due for a June launch in Latin America and Europe.

In addition to the ZTE Open, and Acatel One Touch Fire, Mozilla is promising a roll-out of additional Snapdragon-powered phones from manufacturers Huawei and LG, in markets that include Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela. Announcements about additional markets are on the way. [Engadget, Mozilla, The Verge]

Anymore OS? Choice is good but too many choices is not great.
Paradox of Choice: http://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_on_the_paradox_of_choice.html
maybe, but maybe not if we look at things a little differently, these devices are like mini PCs and most of those operating systems are unix/linux based, wouldnt it be a nice world if you got your device then decided which os you wanted to load onto it. its an idea thats worked with linux distros (or even just “the PC”) for ages
maybe, but maybe not…
Barry Schwartz is a pessimistic old fool.
We all need choice. Lots of choice is good if you know what you want. I think what you be better off saying is, what we dont need is a bad choice in the middle of the good.
More choice and more competition pushes the boundaries and limits of technology. Or we could just have the ‘iphone’ as the only choice of phone available and let the world blend into one miserable society who cant make choices for themselves. (this is not meant as a taunt to iphone owners by the way. it was just fractionally easier to type than android)
I say good on firefox for having a go. you gotta start somewhere.
ZTE and alcatel? really? those are some mighty crappy manufacturers to pick to launch your OS on. so much for best foot forward and all.
Realism dictates this though. Assuming going after new markets & low-cost solutions.
I was thinking the same, Android would have been a sensible choice for them surely.
they cant even manage android phones right (and in the case of alcatel phones at all, theyve always been terrible) maybe its just me but if i were to be releasing a new OS that i wanted to pick up steam id at least release it with one premium device.
im sure they could have got one of the better manufacturers to modify a current android/win phone unit to work with it, ubuntu for phones may not have its own dedicated hardware but at least they launched on a sensible set of hardware (nexus devices)
