Along with a couple of low-end phones we won’t bore you about, Nokia showed off the Lumia 520 and 720 at MWC today. That smaller-numbered device is actually Nokia’s cheapest Windows Phone 8 offering, with the 720 being slightly higher up on the food chain, somewhere between the 620 and 820.
The 720, above, has got a 4.3-inch WVGA screen, and inside, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage. Call the tabloids — there’s also a microSD card slot.
While there’s a huge PureView-shaped omission from the specs sheet, Nokia has upgraded the camera tech inside the 720, with the rear-facing camera measuring 6.7-megapixels with an f2.0 aperture, and the forward-facing one clocking in at 1.3-megapixels.
No LTE, unlike the 920, so you’ll have to make do with the slower data speeds, but hey, at least it’s only 9mm thick, a whole 1.7mm slimmer than the flagship phone. There’s also NFC, and the ability to charge wireless if you plump for one of the compatible covers.
When talking about the 520, Nokia referred to its “pillowy design,” which makes it sound like a real snoozefest if I’m honest. But wait! There are exchangeable cases, in yellow, cyan, white, and red! Plus, it has the same lens technology last seen on the Lumia 920, so there’s that. 5-megapixels, mind.
The display measures 4-inches, and Nokia says it’s so sensitive, you can use it while wearing gloves. Not even those special kinds with the little thumb-pads. RAM is listed at 512MB, whereas storage is 8GB with a microSD card slot, just like its larger brother
The camera on the rear is 5-megapixels, whereas the forward-facing one is 0-megapixels, because Nokia forgot to put one on there. Presumably to keep costs down, and rid the world of poorly-shot selfies.
Meanwhile, the same Cinemagraph GIF-making app seen on the last batch of WP8s is going to be available on the 520, meaning even more people can not talk about that actually-quite-neat feature. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve heard a single person talk about that app since it was announced?
On sale sometime this quarter for 249 Euros, the 720 will come in matte red, cyan, yellow and black, and one glossy white option. Meanwhile, the 520 will be 139 Euros.
Updating live…

Got the 520 for my mother a couple of weeks back, its a nifty little phone for the price.
How? It got announced today! Do you mean 620?
I would like to say I got it by magic, but unfortunately you are correct I got her the 620. Didn’t think they could make a win phone cheaper than the 620.
Did you have a chance to get your hands on them Kat? Is that a curved screen I see in the 720 shots?
I’m not at MWC myself, but Kyle from the US team is, so will hopefully be publishing a hands-on at some point soon…
f/1.9*
Being so colourful I’m sure these have to be very popular among ladies. As per elderly people some one should create a custom ROM and could clearly refer to the design concept of yesterdays Top gear episode?
The 520 sounds like a great phone to see if I can get into the whole ‘windows phone’ thing. I was tempted to get a 920 but spending £5-600 on a phone that I might not even like seems silly… £150 is more like it… that way if I’m not a fan I can just give it to my mum
I now have a 920 (Personal) and an 820 (Work)…and I still want a 520/620/720 as a spare for weekends.
Nokia…welcome home!
LOVE the Cinemagraph app! Guess I’m that one person
This almost makes me regret my Lumia 800 purchase, hm :/.
