The new PlayStation 4 has 8 GB of RAM, which is a huge industry-leading number. But it’s even crazier when you realize that the Playstation 3 only had 512 MB of RAM—256 for the system and 256 for video. The new RAM will enable the new “suspend/resume” functionality that allows you to instantaneously start and top playing by hitting the power button. Makes us really excited for what else all that new memory might enable the console to do.

PlayStation Plus Now on PS Vita Is Your Free-Games Deal of the Day
PS4 Could Launch in November, Alongside PlayStation Cloud Online Streaming Tools
8 GB of ram shared, nothing amazing :\
I have 16 GB ram and 2 GPUS with 4GB VRAM each, though the way SLI work it doesn’t double up so will only stay as 4.
Like Yawn Sony.
Still has to be affordable for Sony and the customer.
8GB is good for a PC and a lot for a console. Should they add more than they need just for the fuck of it increasing price?
No the point Scaramoosh is trying to make is he’s got a kick ass PC gaming rig he made himself
The point is that in 2-3 years 8GB will be restriction the games, 4GB is the bare minimum for any pc these days to run ok, 8GB will get you by on every current thing, but in a few years it won’t.
But PCs aren’t as efficient with their memory usage. current consoles are running on 512mb! You PC guys probably didn’t think RAM was even available in sizes smaller than a gig any more.
Not really, games on the PC do more then games on consoles. If you want you could run a PC with 512MB of ram but why would you want to?
You may think things on PC use a lot of ram but most of the times it is being used as cache, you close a programe but it is kept in ram as you may want to use it again and it will be quicker to load from ram then hdd. If you need that ram for somthing else then it is cleared.
That is why you may think PC’s use more ram.
well the ps3 and 360 have lasted 6 years with great games …so you point is invalid
The games on the PS3 and Xbox 360 look very dated compared to pc games, even the same game on PS3 looks bad compared to it on PC.
8GB is plenty for a £300 plug in and play next gen console its 16x the last generation which in turn was 16x the generation previous to that.
Consoles have ALWAYS been 1 step behind PC’s, being priced for the mainstream and with new bleeding edge graphics cards coming out every couple of months how can they not be. with that in mind why is Scaramoosh and others stating the F***ing obvious over and over again, I can only assume its to draw attention to the size of their rigs. &_&
And that cost how much?
Not much, ram is cheap, mobos are cheap, cpus are cheap and the only thing that costs money are GPUS. You keep most the stuff like cases, psus, ram, sound cards, monitors etc anyways. Really the only thing I ever buy are the mobos, cpus and gpus…
It’s cheap.
DDR3 is – Hynix GDDR5 ain’t.
We’ll wait and see what the release price is for the PS4, and see if you can create a comparable system for the same price from scratch. If you can create something cheaper that will run not just today’s games but also the games we’ll be playing in 3-5 years time without upgrading then maybe I’ll switch to PC gaming. I’ll even wash the dirty console peasant smell off my skin.
Who cares about specs when I’m playing exclusive titles PC can’t get?
What exclusives? All third party.
I mean what exclusives does Sony have? First Party games and tbh……. what do they have? Killzone? Drive Club? That MM game based on Move :\
Keep your exclusives lol.
Isn’t the only PC game World of Warcraft?
Killzone – Bore off
Drive Club – OH MY GOD! LOOK AT THE SWEDE PATTERN ON THE CHAIR!
The only game that looked good was Watch Dogs, and that’s coming to PS4, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, so a PC version will be there somewhere, even if it’s just a port
PC gaming is the only way now I think, next Gen consoles won’t match my Rig that i created Christmas 2011, and the only change i’ve made since then was changing my primary Hard Drive to SSD
yet you have hardly any games to play
well done
PC Games (i usually get mine from here, leave them to download overnight) – http://store.steampowered.com/
Has everything I want to play, plus i have a wired Xbox 360 controller so i can play everything with Xbox 360 controls, rather than keyboard and mouse
You can also try and play around with Xbox 360 and PS3 emulators that are out there, don’t know if any of them work, never needed to know
What exclusives do PC’s have !?!? the fact of the matter is without consoles, the majority of game developers aren’t going to spend tens of millions developing a PC only game, they simply wont see a return on their investment. You better pray the PS4 and the rest of the next gen consoles succeed or your going to have little or no games which push your PC gaming rig anywhere near what its capable of !
So what you’re saying there is, if the consoles don’t succeed then PC won’t have any games, but then, won’t you have any games either, as the console hasn’t succeeded
Least if gaming dies or goes mobile or whatever will happen, we still have a fully functional, powerful PC which we can use for many many things
Yes you can use them for many other things but high end video games with expensive hollywood style effects and graphics wont be one of them
Civilization, mount and blade, all the MMORPG’s like eve online and WOW, sins of a solar empire, the ability to modify games… To be honest I’ve been away from PC gaming for a while but there are lots of PC only titles out there, most especially in the strategy area.
Yes agreed I don’t mean there are no PC exclusives, I was really a making a statement what I meant was there are virtually no PC only games which push the hardware, as you say the exclusives are usually in the less graphical intense strategy end of the market.
I used to be into PC gaming back in the day with Quake Halflife and counter strike, which were PC only and cutting edge in their day but hardware has moved on, it cost a lot more to develop a game which pushes the hardware to the fullest today with massive teams of artists to model all the game objects to the level of detail the hardware demands. You’d be hard press to get that degree of funding for such a game these days if you announced in your pitch it was PC only.
Agreed, if you think of graphics as rendering a small number of shiny objects very well BUT where PC’s excell is in doing it with lots and lots of objects. Games with extreme amounts of players and bots on a single map or worlds with massive scope. That’s what I love about the PC, consoles just aren’t rigged up to do it and in a way I think their current closeness to Pcs could be stifling some things like that (although Starcraft two shows that developers will still push the PC market, there’s still money there, maybe just as much as ever in real terms if not relative to the money in consoles.
Uncharted
Uncharted 2
Uncharted 3
UNCHARTED 4??!
Case closed, thank you and goodbye
Don’t forget ‘God Of War’ & ‘The Last Of Us’
Scara, this should perform better than a 2 grand gaming computer, given it’s all optimised. Couple of interesting articles around nowadays, but this should be right up there for at least 3-5 years.
The PS4 uses GDDR5 RAM. A 4GB GDDR graphics card costs in the region of $500.

The PS4 has roughly the equivalent of $1000 of RAM in it.
good god a console which actually has adequate ram, thats a nice thing to see for once (but then the ps3s memory bottleneck was shocking)
The PS3 used 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz and 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz
That XDR Ram is crazy fast, i’m assuming the PS4 being based around mainstream-ish components will be having 8gb ddr3 shared. So it has 16x as much but I think that XDR ram did a lot more than it’s mere 256MB suggest.
The PS4 is using 8gb of GDDR5 RAM, so it should fly like hot, buttered shit off of a well lubed shovel.
128GB/Sec I read somewhere?
How fast is that in Weasels per foot of trouser leg?
I tried to check but Google haven’t added that on their calculator yet
3.21 WPFoTL
That’s fast enough to give you friction burns!
