After showing us tons of awesome looking games, Sony have straight up denied us the console. We have specs, we’ve seen the controller, but we haven’t seen the box yet. No price, no release date. We don’t even know when Sony will tell us more. Sony stoked our excitement, and there’s no way to be satisfied. What a bummer.
Well, we guess it’s a box? We don’t really know what it is. All night we heard about all the lofty ideas behind the development of the new console, but as the hours of demos and introductions dragged on, it became increasingly obvious that we weren’t actually going to see the PlayStation 4. Not yet. All this talk about “the coming months” and “this year” is really depressing. Sony either isn’t ready for primetime, or Sony doesn’t want to show the new console yet. Oh well.

Halo Developer's Next Game Reveal Coincides With Sony's PS4 Event...
Is This the Real PS4 Controller?
Any of These PS4 Controllers Take Your Fancy?
Maybe they’re still finalising the design. Or how many HDMI ports it will have.
P
Sony you suck
Shame on you!!!
2 hour event without anything by the sounds of it.
We were told what the console can do, some developers and their games/tech, the controller and an approximate launch period.
The only thing missing is what the box that holds the chips looks like and that is probably the least important aspect considering people bought the original Xbox and that looked like a radioactive turd.
I’m getting very bored of seeing your username popping up all over posts about the PS4, you know. We get it, you’re a 1337 PC gamer who denies that consoles have an existence and wants to wipe them off the face of the earth. You’re entitled to your own opinion. You’re wrong, of course, but never mind.
What, do you think they’re gonna show you everything all in one go?
.
I’ve watched the event, even though I’m a PC,
What they did show was good content.
E3 is obviously going to be the hardware unveiling.
Can’t wait to see what their rivals come up with.
PC’s seem so human like these days… Ai really picking up a pace I guess…
I’ve met a few PC’s in my life, and by all accounts they don’t like to play games just chat about the graphics and the like.
I hope your minecraft disease isn’t contagious
S
the least exciting “launch” ever. blatantly shaking in their boots at an imminent E3 Xbox announcement. it’s hauntingly reminiscent of the cobbled Move launch.

I can see this being in the Top 10 of tech muck ups of 2013
3 USB – 3.0, 2 HDMI, (Port on the back for the camera/kinect thing), Wireless controller charging (place the controllers/qi phones?! on the PS4),
Blu Ray Drive that lights up blue sometimes (Wii like), interchangeable HDD and also a 12GB SSD for speedy shit.
Yeah, I feel like such a fool for staying up last night.
There is a relatively obvious reason for this. They hinted throughout the night that the PS4 was going to be the first all digital console. They did not mention once that the PS4 would be using disks, yet mentioned constantly that you will download games from the playstation store.
The reason they didn’t actually show the PS4 is because they didn’t want to directly come out and say that they are going the download only route and therefore killing the used games market. They couldn’t justify coming out and saying this yet unless they were willing to say already that games will be significantly cheaper and this could either be because they WON’T be significantly cheaper or because they don’t want to reveal any pricing yet.
Also I think download-only is a particularly bad idea. PS4 games should be AT LEAST 50GB and this is roughly the amount most ISPs cap internet traffic at. After downloading 1 game (or less if games are even bigger) ISPs will be throttling users speeds down to a trickle, essentially making the console useless. Unless Sony has a new contract with every ISP on the planet, I cannot see how they can get around this problem.
I say no.
I say that it’s simply because they haven’t yet figured out the best way to put the tech into a plastic shell. There are a lot of hot components in there, the thermal design is important. That’s why in the leaked screens we’ve seen the real controller but only a prototype box.
Sony knows some people’s ISP’s cap at 50GB. They wouldn’t be THAT stupid. Or would they…?
Sony released a tech sheet that confirms a BluRay drive, so it ain’t all-digital. I’m going to guess that since a drive exists, they’re going to use it.
Someone proposed a theory that the last-minute switch up to 8GB RAM was in reaction to MS planning to incorporate 8GB into Durango, and that the lack of a finalised design was to allow for re-engineering in order to permit better airflow and cooling for the extra chips. Sounds plausible.
Then I find it extremely weird that they failed to mention that during the event. I have a feeling that they are going to try and get rid of used games and that not mentioning the Bluray drive during the event was a way of softening the blow to consumers when they announce it some time later in the year.
Computer says no: http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2013/02/the-ps4-wont-block-used-games-after-all/
I think it’s going to be pretty standard BluRay format disc media.
Yeh I just noticed that. I really have no idea why that wouldn’t mention this during the conference then. Especially since this is a huge positive for most people.
*that=they*
I saw some direct quotes today from someone at Sony, unhelpfully I can’t remember where, basically saying that they will NOT be barring second-hand games and that you will not need an internet connection to use the console or play games. Very wise move from Sony imo.
Definitely a wise move.
Went to bed when they trotted out The Shooting Game. Although I hear I may have missed The Driving Game?
Thankfully I never stay awake late up at night to watch something that will be in market when it will be, it’s nothing revolutionary, get a life people!
Shut it
No you!
okay sir
No its ok, I will!
That’s the most polite debate I think I’ve ever witnessed. Did I slip into Giz Canada by mistake?
I both have a life and stayed up to watch.
I am merely a bit of a loser.
Me too
Best thing was not being able to watch it on my PS3!?
It was incredibly anticlimactic. Only wanted to know how long my PS3 has to cling onto life for.
Who cares about what it looks like? We got to see what we wanted and that’s another way for them to keep the hype alive and maybe surprises at the end?
..Behold! Proof that the world is slowly hurling into a cluster-f*** of nitpicking cretins.
Okay, really.. What does it matter? Why does it matter? They’ve announced almost everything about it, so what does a bloody picture of the CONSOLE matter? It’ll end up collecting dust, in a corner, or under a desk. People don’t care about design, you don’t see people fangasming over the Wii U anymore. That’s because, of all the “features”, it’s the appearance of the console that has the least impact and dissipates fastest. But when people have the opportunity to whine and moan.. Of course!
OF COURSEEEEEEE you need a picture of the console! IT MEANS EVERYTHING. Who cares about specs, the controller, or various features announced? WE WANT TO SEE THE BOX. The box that will most likely be a large black rectangle, with “PS4″ stuck on it. SONY YOU SCUMMMMMMMMMM YOU ARE SCUMMM ROT IN HELLL!
^^^
And that, is what what a majority of these people look like, to me.
