Oh my God, I can hardly believe it. We all woke up this morning to find that the Apple Store is down! Who knows what’s coming — probably absolutely nothing. Unlike other companies, Apple has to take its store offline to change anything, so it’s probably just maintenance. But maybe there’s some sort of revolutionary new thing coming, or maybe even an apology for making such a botch-up of iOS 6.1? We can only hope. [Apple]

The Apple Store Is Down
The Apple Store Is Down as a Nation Trembles in Confusion and Fear
There's a Whac-a-Mole Game Hiding in This Run-of-the-Mill Cabinet
An apology in the Apple Store? I don’t buy it.
My money is on the slap bracelet thing – the iTag – used to track the physical activity of hipsters and sex offenders.
Ooo, I like it. Buy this, so we know where you are at all times, for your own good. You know, just incase you happen to wander anywhere near a Microsoft store, we’ll warn you. We wouldn’t want you to take a wrong turn…
A cross between an offender tag and one of those electric shock collars for dogs. Get too close to someone elses store and you get a jolt.
The iTag already exists. You’re wearing it now.

I realise that came across as anti-apple, which – of course – I’m not since I ‘av a iPhone a iPad a iMac a apple TV and even a Apple Hifi – and despite what everyone says, it sounds immense.
I was just trying to be cool. :’(

Is it just me that gets frustrated by that skeuomorphic piece of paper that’s not square with the screen?
Similar to this: http://xkcd.com/1015/
It adds a visual dynamic that squaring to the screen wouldn’t have. One of the rules of attracting attention, put things on a slant.
One of the rules of pissing me off, more like!
Put me in front of an of square place mat and I can’t leave it be but this doesn’t seem to bother me so much. It’s not like it’s made of ‘stitched leather’
I’m the exact opposite. Anything I find that has been placed symmetrical I have to nudge slightly off to create a visual tension. It’s what makes The Shard more interesting than it would be if it merely soared to a point, that slightly not finished feel.
I don’t mind a bit of asymmetry, I got in trouble recently for making some cupboards asymmetrical
I just like things like place mats and cutlery to be straight and perpendicular (it’s my one bit of OCD)
It’s the Iwatch I reckon. I don’t think anything else would warrant down-time of the apple store.
Gonna wear the F5 key out today haha
Because I’ve got nothing else to do this morning, some baseless speculation…
New Mac Pro?
Not really a big deal enough for a press event, but enough work that they have to add in a few new pages on the store.
That’s very true.
I thought you said that you weren’t going to report every time the Apple Store went down anymore?
EVERYONE PANIC!!!!
It’s back up …what’s changed then?
no idea, it looks like same old shit to me lol
Never been there before so cannot tell, however they make something called an iPad with “Retina” display.
Are they an opticians supplier?
It’s not the Mac Pro at least, well, you can’t actually buy it still, so I’m assuming nothing’s changed on that front.
It was a bit of maintenance apparently.
Phew, we almost overreacted to something.
Do people really think its going to be a new product? We haven’t had nearly enough leaks or some kind of press conference
Last time they did this, it was to change the bar at the top to a few shades darker
Some products get a spec bump and stuff without much fanfare, mainly if there’s not a massive deviation from the current model.
Why is apple pretty much the only online store than has to go down to update its product line or makes changes?! To be fair it gets them a bit a of free press every time it does go down!
Exactly. I’m sure they have the ability to update the store without taking it down, but they’d lose out on hype, press and historically it’s just the way that Apple do it.
I think in addition doing the updates the way they do is meant to give the impression that it takes more effort to do it, along with the wording implying that it’s “for you” the customer personally, and as such that it’s part of the overall image of their products as being “crafted” and special rather than mass-produced. All psychological marketing basically.
Mothers Day update by the looks of it…
