Firefox OS won’t be coming to the UK until 2014, and chances are that its rather budget approach is not for you, dear gadget-obsessed Giz reader. But Firefox OS burst onto the scene yesterday at MWC with announcements of new, upcoming handsets, and a global roll-out plan. It’s poised to bring smartphone goodness to the feature-phone masses in a flash of HTML5 glory and this is what it looks like. What do you think?

Meet the ZTE Open, First Official Firefox OS Phone
This Is What iOS 6's Passbook Will Look Like in Action
Ouya Might Be Getting Firefox
4 icons at the bottom, really? With the prevalence of android and iphone is it really worth Mozilla’s time to invest in this? I saw him unlock the phone and that’s all I needed. Its just not appealing, if you really want to launch a new phone OS then I feel you have to actually bring something new to the table, thats why I quite liked the Ubuntu phone OS.
The Ubuntu phone does look amazing, but your missing the purpose of the OS.
It’s not really for us as they are only releasing them to developing countries to start with.
I see, but surely android phones are just as cheap?
Probably, but there is no word on pricing yet. That is just where they are trying to make there mark, as the market is a bit crowded over here.
Man that looks about as smooth as something that isn’t very smooth..
…about as smooth as your nans back door?
That is just a complete waste of time. Why would anyone want to use this? I really don’t get it.
I have to reserve judgement on this.
Everybody seems to be really dismissive, but there are a lot of things to consider;
Smartphone users are generally polarized into two brand-loyalty camps and so brainwashed into their positions that the birth of a third camp is not going to be welcomed.
If the OS is low power with minimal ‘bells and whistles’, does it change the battery life game?
This is probably their first working build. As I recall early Android phones weren’t exactly swish either.
Demonstrating the OS on blue and orange phones is a bad idea. It’s as if Mozilla are trying to say ‘look how fun and different we are’ when it’s fairly obvious that the public want iPhone clones. If this was shown off on a black slim-bezel 5″ device I think there’d be a lot more positivity.
You’ve also got to remember that Mozilla is a non-profit. They’re not ‘marketing’ these devices like Samsung or Apple would. Someone could re-cut this demonstration with a bit of lens-flare and a dubstep soundtrack and you’d want it. You know you would.
That is possibly one of the most underwhelming OS introductions I have ever seen. The look is very dated in my opinion. Still, appreciate that there are options for different territories / smartphone products.
Just reminds me of what Jolicloud were doing though and as someone else has stated, Ubuntu mobile OS is more interesting than this.
