NASA’s Voyager 1 is out there, still going strong, and is due to pass out of our own solar system. If it was still functioning at the end of time for our Sun, this is what it might look like. Beautiful, in death’s cold, dark embrace.
It’s more an artistic look at the events following the cessation of fusion, rather than a scientific one, but it’s stunning nonetheless. It was made in memory of Arjan Groot, a graphic designer who passed back in 2011. A fitting tribute. [Stardust via io9]

Worth a look, but it’s a bit more “artsy” than the title suggests.
Our sun’s too small to undergo expansion into a red giant, and not big enough to turn into a black hole. When it finally goes, it’ll collapse into a white dwarf, then possibly a neutron star. There won’t be any big explosions of matter flying outward involved as depicted (although there will be huge bursts of various radiations) – it’ll collapse in on itself.
I’m pretty sure our sun will expand into a red giant – just not a super red giant. There will also be a lot of matter flying outwards as it will undergo a planetary nebula – just not a supernovae. A white dwarf will be left behind, certainly not a neutron star; our sun would have to be an awful lot bigger to produce one of those bad boys.
Thats about as accurate as if I attempted to recreate the death of the sun using dance and pompoms.
The sun would first swell, throwing off its outer layers. This would engulf the inner planets, including Earth, which would be long dead. Then it would collapse into a smaller star, such as a white dwarf, before cooling and contracting into a lump of dense matter.
Beautiful
Those going about the accuracy… read the damn article…

Thought I was watching deleted scenes from Sunshine to start with.
Nicely done though, and a very pleasing soundtrack.
