Drinking and driving is the worst. Texting and driving is pretty bad too. So what about getting high and driving? Apparently not that bad! Unless you’re freaking stoned as hell. Then you’ll fail so hard and maybe even lose a nose.
CNN hilariously asked three people to get high on marijuana to see how it affects their driving ability, putting them to a US driving test immediately after they smoked. Like using most substances that your body feel good but makes your brain less smart, the people who smoked weed the most did the best in the driving test. Occasional users flamed out early, driving so suspiciously slow that a cop admitted he would’ve pulled him over. To his credit, he couldn’t even find his nose because he was so damn high.
But even the heavy users who smoke everyday eventually hit a wall when they can’t drive anymore. The girl who smoked everyday was basically taking the driving instructor on a joyride because it’s not everyday she could do those things. So yeah. If you’re high, don’t drive. Still better than driving under the influence of alcohol.
A certain Mr. Bill Hicks certainly puts this issue into perspective.

Here’s another good one.

This video just proves how marijuana is much better than alcohol, yet it is the alcohol that is legal.
That was really interesting, I was impressed that they included ALL the data rather than trying to skew it with the ye olde “drugs are bad, mmkay” attitude and manipulating the results.
I’ve maintained for a long time that driving stoned, while not as bad as driving drunk, is still impairment. As this video illustrated, some people actually drive very well when a bit stoned… I had a mate back when I was younger who transformed into the most incredible driver after a joint. I was involved in a very bad accident aged 16 so am usually a really nervous passenger in cars, can’t explain it though… he was just calmer, his reactions were spot on and I always felt very safe in his vehicle. I would suggest though that people wait a couple of hours till they’re not high as a kite before driving! Impairment is impairment whether it stems from poor eyesight, drunkenness or cannabis.
They only got bad after smoking a gram! And it’s American weed that will be a lot stronger than most of the stuff we smoke.
I smoked weed once, thought I was going to have a heart attack, never done it since. I just stick to drinking every day thanx.
Weed sure isn’t for everyone. Sometime’s I’m fine and other times I feel how you just described (yet I don’t bother to learn from that experience and still smoke it occasionally).
“the one time in your life – you should DO IT!” Gotta love that girl.
I saw a similar test on Fifth Gear a few years ago and the guy not only drove the course just as carefully stoned, but actually drove is faster.
I imagine speed is always likely to be the issue. I’m in the seat with Addy when she hits though corners for the buzz.
Addy’s cool!
An interesting study. I’d say driving around those tiny cones would be a tad harder than driving on an ordinary street too with familiar cues that occur while driving in your own neighborhood.
The officer at the end described backing into one of the cones on par with backing into a lamp post – I would have thought the lamp post would be a lot more visible in a rear view mirror than one of the cones.
That girl is amazing. Why can’t the girls I know be half as cool as her.
