The WSJ is confirming what we all saw in Sony’s slick video teaser for its upcoming February 20th event we just saw: Sony will be announcing the PlayStation 4. Citing the ol’ reliable ‘people familiar with the matter’, the WSJ says that the PS4 will be announced on February 20th and be released later this year.
The WSJ also reports that Sony will try to throw in more “social gaming aspects” in the PS4, focusing more on how people “interact with the machine” than the sheer hardware power of the system. Sony had considered ditching the disk drive and using game downloads, but decided that video game file sizes would be too large and Internet connections may be too slow to handle the load. Which means we can still expect the ol’ Blu-ray bay to be in the PS4. The announcement of the PS4 will beat Microsoft’s Xbox 360 successor to the punch, it’s unclear if the actual next generation system will too. Both are expected to launch by this Christmas. [WSJ]

PS3 FTW YAY!
PS4*
Both
bet you wish there was an EDIT button ay?.. YOU LISTENING GIZ??
Aye
a little bit of wee just came out..
Surely not?! …it looks like everything’s coming up Millhouse!
Nice little reference there!
Now lets hope blogs like Gizmodo, Kotaku and Eurogamer can ignore any leaks so we can have more of a surprise this time around. Roll on 20th Feb!
Yes, would be nice but a leak will come out like a week before it with what it looks like and what it actually has
But I will read it anyway.
There’s already been plenty of leaks, we essentially know the hardware. 4Gb of RAM, 8-core CPU, Dual-Shock with a touchpad on the back, etc…
Well yes, apart form those leaks. But more console cosmetics and general idea of what the machine is going to do differently against the competition. Any new leaks from now I hope can be ignored.
if it still has that same little cruddy controller im going to cry.. its too small for my man hands.. not all gamers are 12 any more..
its fine for my normal sized adult hands. maybe you need one for giants?
you can get xbox pads for the ps3 or just use a convertor.
the only issue i have with the ds3 pads is that the right analogue stick always gets sticky. all 5 of my pads have this issue now. i need to open them up i guess and give them a clean
It’s fine for my hands aswell? that guy must be used to the xbox controller, personally I have both and I can adapt pretty much instantly, but even when I am playing the xbox I still think in my head Triangle, X, Circle or Square
maybe i have big hands.. i do have to buy XL gloves.. and i DO also play xbox more than 360.. the main thing is that the sticks are in a position that after a while gives me cramp where as the xbox ones spread out a little more.. i might look into this xbox pad for ps3 thingy!!
and i DO also play xbox more than 360.
hehe. I play Playstation more than PS3
HAHAHA.. FFS, i need that edit button and more coffee.. i play Xbox more than Playstation..
You just ruined it for me!!! OJ, that’s just pure specs though, I want to see what the system is actually like, the OS.
I thought the guys at Sony were waiting for the xbox to drop so they could then improve on the ps4 to out perform it?
That’s what the press said. They probebly know by now anyway, with all the leaks. Just make the console a beast…
I think this generation they need to finally think more about just ‘upping the specs’. We’ve got to a point now where all the systems are HD and powerful enough to produce pretty gorgeous, near photo realistic graphics where ‘anything is possible’. Sure we expect both system to have a good spec increase, but it’s not longer enough on it’s own to justify the hefty price tags of a new system, especially with all the competition from smartphone and tablet gaming etc. They need to do some DIFFERENT, innovative, in the way Nintendo did with the Wii and MS did with Kinect.
I think I just did a sex wee!
This is good news for us xbox’ers .. this might force Microsofts hand to get the xbox out in the public quicker.
How is that good news? they will push the xbox out like they did with the 360 and they will all break.
After last time i can’t see Microsoft making the same mistake. For all anyone knows the xbox hardware may have been completed months ago and pushing it outeven earlier than thought might make no difference at all.
True, as I said in a lower comment I hope reliability is a top priority for both company’s.
PC master race, report in!
That said, I expect that the PS4 will have some backwards compatibility so I could always pick up a cheap PS3 for the blu ray and upgrade when the PS4 gets a better selection of games.
You do know the last bunch of guys to call themselves the master race were a bunch of dicks… :-p
Backwards compatibility would be nice but it’s not something I’ve ever used on a console. When I get the PS4 I’ll still have my PS3 to play PS3 games on, although that could just end up as a media device at work.
It was meant in jest, obviously, but I have been considering the PS3 as a cheap blu-ray player that I could also play WipEout on.
Time will tell.
So it looks like the games stores will JUST about remain on the high street for the foreseeable then.
I suppose so, unless they do a Google / Apple and sell it directly from the websites (next day delivery)for a good price.
ok so what happened them to letting microsoft make the first move like they ranted on about in a interview, also saying they are letting microsoft make 1st move so to stop them making the xbox more powerful than the ps4 :S
guess that plan went out the window, although wouldnt give microsoft little time to make changes but this is microsoft they can do anything they want as fast as they want i suppose
No PS4, just a new ultraslim PS3 in 5 new colors
