If you see George Osborne pausing, repeatedly reaching for his phone and going quiet for 30 seconds during today's budget, it'll be because he's joined the modern world and is live-tweeting the event himself on his new Twitter account.
The Chancellor's official account went live this morning, with a message claiming this afternoon's budget "tackles the economy's problems head on helping those who want to work hard & get on" alongside a photograph of himself. And he's already picked up a retweet off his mate Dave (above), so that's good.
Although predictably enough, the hatred is also flooding in his direction. Reading his @replies is rather grim, as the bile-high tweeters of the nation give George stacks of advice about where to stick his thoughts on the economy. We have never seen so many uses of the c-word, and we don't mean "conservative."
That said, Osborne has picked up an impressive 21,000 followers this morning alone, so he's at least managed to get one set of numbers heading in the right direction. [Twitter]
