A new battle in the great global Patent War has broken out, with a company co-owned by Sony and Philips going after Apple for infringing 15 patents covering various security systems. The claim includes improper use by iPhone, iPad, Macs, Apple TV and... everything. It's a nuclear patent bomb.
According to the statement released by Intertrust, Apple is using its patents on "virtually every level" of its business, which makes you wonder why it's taken so long for it to notice and do something about it. Talal Shamoon, Intertrust’s CEO, said: "Apple makes many great products that use Intertrust’s inventions. Our patents are foundational to modern Internet security and trusted computing, and result from years of internal research and development."
So they'd like some millions of dollars from Apple in order to go away. [Apple Insider]
