This may or may not come as a surprise to you, but according to the numbers, WhatsApp messenger is actually bigger than Twitter now. It pushes a colossal 12 billion outbound and 8 billion inbound messages daily, and has 200 million monthly active users. The best thing, though? No ads.
You will have to pay about 70p a year for the service though, but that's better than getting annoyed by ads, right? The impressive thing, from a technical standpoint, is that WhatsApp manages all this with just 50 staff, which is apparently the highest user-to-staff ratio of any solid tech company right now.
I know it's not quite the same as Twitter, of course, but perhaps Twitter could learn a few things or two about how to make money and provide a decent, ad-free service, because WhatsApp has seemingly managed it, even if it has got a daft name; what does 'WhatsApp' even mean anyway? [TechCrunch]
