Following the news that Morrisons is going to start delivering food direct to your door courtesy of Ocado, it begs the question, how many of you actually do your food shopping online?
By tying-up with Ocado, Morrisons became the last big-chain supermarket in Britain to start offering online shopping. The deal has put the cat among the pigeons as far as Waitrose is concerned, as Ocado claims that there's nothing in its deal with the supermarket that says its exclusive. That's a bit like saying you aren't explicitly exclusive with your girlfriend -- there might not be a contract but she sure as hell isn't going to like it when you play the field.
Anyway, whether Ocado signing with Morrisons ends up ejecting Waitrose or not, it's a massive deal for loss-making Ocado, given the size and monetary weight the northern chain has. For what it's worth, I flit between the two. Every couple of weeks I do a massive online shop for all the things I can't get in my local Sainsbury's, but then I live in London and supermarkets aren't what they are outside the big smoke. [BBC]
